That would be a really good choice, actually, it stays fluffy. A couple things to keep in mind:

1) Do NOT put the mulch on until after the soil freezes up and winter is about to set in, probably late November. Too early, and trapped moisture can rot the crowns.

2) REMOVE the mulch as soon as the ground thaws, for the same reason.

3) AVOID mulch entirely if you have voles -- they will hide under the mulch and eat the centers from the crowns.

Snow is more then enough protection. I have NEVER mulched my strawberry beds and have not noticed any damage.

Strawberries are overall pretty hardy (june bearing).

Here in south Michigan I found that I get half the berries from an unmulched patch that I would get from a mulched patch. I use wheat straw. I apply it after the ground freezes and fluf it up as I drop it on the plants and stop appling when you can not see any more green. good luck JOHN
