Sedge overtaking Bermuda - help

Hi - I've got multiple varieties of sedge taking over my Bermuda lawn. The most annoying the kind that grows 3 times faster than the Bermuda. Even with mowing twice a week, the sedge grows so fast the lawn looks like a pasture. Can sedge grass be killed w/o damaging the Bermuda. Anyone with any experience with this, your help appreciated.

    google "Image herbicide"

Sedgehammer and Image are the most effect and very expensive.

I've never had much luck with Image, however I do get good results with Sedgehammer in my Bermuda. I've also noticed it has no adverse effects on the grass when used in high temps (the label doesn't mention it as a problem either).

In the past I could only find it on Ebay, but I have recently found it in a couple of local garden/farm supply stores. Be sure to apply with a surfactant/spreader-sticker.

Here is a link that might be useful: [Sedgehammer Label](http://www.gowanco.com/(S(aq1atzvrkoovxd55ytk3ija5))/Reference/Document~rid~312~Sedgehammer01-R0705.pdf.aspx)

Be careful applying anything this time of year....read the label carefully for the amount to use and the temperature. I believe Image says not to use on warm season grasses if it is going to be over 90. I learned the hard way last year....at least I only did it on a 10'x14' test patch. :)

I'm pretty sure I've seen sedgehammer at lowes

I have a little nutsedge in my lawn. I have used Image in the past and it worked OK. I had reapply Image 2-3 times a season which was expensive.

My strategy now is to use a strong solution of MSMA (which is much cheaper than Image) and spray the nutsedge heavily when temperatures are around 90. The bermuda around does gets yellow for 2-3 weeks, but within a month it is back to normal. The nutsedge gets killed in one application.

Nutsedge is a very hardy plant and weak applications of any weed killer will not affect it. Hence the strong solution of MSMA.

My neighbor's bermuda lawn is about 20% nutsedge. Using MSMA, my bermuda lawn is about 0.1% nutsedge.

Is MSMA available at Lowes/Home Depot ? Which MSMA product would be the best to use on the sedge ?

MSMA is the most common herbicide found in virtually in all products, read the label. While you are reading the label you will also notice Nutsedge is not listed. And if you have Purple Nutsedge; all spraying it with MSMA is going to do is make it MAD as he!! and strike revenge on you.

    Godd Luck

I recently used Sedgehammer on my patch of nutsedge and it worked great--kicked out about 90% of it. I bought mine off eBay. Just got another one to kill the 10% that still persists. I have successfully killed nutsedge with several super strength Roundup treatments, but the Sedgehammer worked much better with only one application.

OK, MSMA applied and nutsedge, Alexander grass & crabgrass appear to have died after a week or so and Bermuda appears unscathed. A couple of questions please ...

    1) Will my Bermuda ever come back in the weed-affected areas ?
    2) What is the best product to apply in mulched garden beds, particularly beds with ground cover, i.e. dwarf jasmine ?

Lawnchair - It appears you were able to kill the nutsedge. If your bermuda is yellow now, you may want to fertilize and water that area if temperatures in your area are below 90.

Bermuda is very good at self repairing / regenerating itself. I have killed the nutsedge with strong solutions of MSMA. The bermuda did become yellow, but it became green again within a few weeks as the bermuda filled back in.

Regarding mulched garden beds, you can't apply MSMA or anything similar becuase it will kill the plants in the beds. I resort to hand weeding, which is painful.

Texas-weed - I used MSMA and it DID kill the nutsedge. I had an area of about 3' x 3' that had alot of nutsedge that I used MSMA on last year and it hasn't returned. The key thing is a strong dose, not a weak dose.

How do you dilute .9 gram of Sedgehammer/Manage for use for spot treatment of Nutsedge, into a 24 oz spray bottle?? I don't need 1-2 gallons of the stuff for "spot" application.

I have used IMAGE with some MSMA, and it does not work very well in Bermuda. Kills the Bermuda in spots and takes a month to come back--nutsedge comes back in two weeks!

I think it's important to reveal the actual chemical names when talking about these herbicides. It's confusing otherwise. Image is a brand name. They make several herbicides including Atrazine, MSMA, and Imazaquin. These companies love to make everyone think their products are exclusive and so the "Brand name" gets tossed around like it's the only one out there. For some products it may be true that their's is the only one. Image started out that way but added the Atrazine and MSMA products to capitalize on the "Image" name while all along those herbicides were already there. MSMA does kill nutsedge but it's effective on the yellow and not the purple. Sedgehammer (Halosulfuron) kills both yellow and purple nutsedge. As far as making up a solution for spot spraying...I'm not sure it will work well that way. It may need to be sprayed over the area. Mixing these chemicals is super important. You can't just guess. If you do it will kill everything or nothing. I have a herbicide called Cimarron. It mixes at a rate of .6 ounces per acre!!! You have to get serious with these chemicals. MSMA is monosodiumethanearsonate. (Key word here.... Arsonic) Be careful, read the labels, mix properly, wear protective cothing, wash you equipment after use. These are serious chemicals and should be treated seriously.

Is it okay to mix the Sedgehammer in the tank with MSMA to get broader spectrum weed control?

You should probably start a new thread but....Maybe, maybe not. Wear proper eye & skin protection if you plan to mix unknown chemicals.
