Overseeding new home

Hi All,

I just bought a new home in NJ and the previous owners did not care about the lawn at all. I am going to attempt to overseed and save this lawn. I know I have to hurry.

I have read many of the posts here and found this web site as I have been looking for reviews on many of the new things I must buy.

I am currently thinking of 50% KBG (maybe midnight?) and 50% tall fescue (for the dry summers we sometimes get here).

Is this OK? What can I do better?

There is an overwhelming amount of info on this forum and I am making myself nuts trying to figre out what blend to use.

Thanks...

There is no "perfect" grass. The best one for you depends on the situation. Is the lawn going to get a lot of use? Any dogs or kids? Does all of it get plenty of sun or are parts or all shady? Are you going to be able to water it weekly or will it have to fend for itself? How much land are you talking about - an urban lot or a couple of acres? Also, are you willing/able to spend a bit of time taking care of it, or are you looking for as little work as possible?

If you answer those q's, you'll get better recommendations.

Thanks for responding. My access to the internet has not been easy with the new house not set up yet. Here is the situation. No kids or pets. The grass is mostly sunny all day. It is a little over an acre of grass. Have sprinklers, so water is no problem. I do not anticipate it geting much use. I do not mind spending some time taking care of it, but with over an acre, I have to minimize the maintenance some how.

I went to a Lesco store to see what they have the other day and the guy gave me a million reasons why I should buy their ready made seed. Any comments on that?
    Thanks

So sorry to have to ask more questions.
    1. What state do you live in?
    2. What do want to accomplish, a green lawn or a showcase lawn? An acre is pretty large for a lawn, but you say irrigation won't be a problem.

In the meanwhile, here is yearly maintenance schedule near the top outlined in red.

I live in NJ, zone 6. Ideally, I would like a showcase lawn. Thanks.

In NJ, if you are willing to water and want a showcase lawn, got with 100% elite KBG. If you scroll down the to the thread titled something like "I hate stores", bestlawn posted a link showing where you can buy them. If you go that route, kill off the existing scraggly lawn and start fresh. I know it sounds drastic, but you don't want off color, old grass sticking out in your new lawn.

Are you really prepared to water an acre though? That is a lot of water and will likely be a big water bill each month. Also, more and more cities are putting in watering restrictions, so be prepared for that possibility. Most people with lots of land end up compromising - something like a showcase front lawn and a lower input back lawn.

    Galaxy Blend

    You can purchase from
Roselawn Agriseed at 503-651-2130 ask for John
He will be very helpful if you have other questions.

Like Bill, I also suggest you define a lawn area.
If you overseed the existing grass, order 2 pounds per 1000 sqft
If you kill off the existing lawn, order 3-4 pounds per 1000 sqft

Size can be decieiving. I thought I had an acre of grass on my 2.5 acre property but after I subtracted out my house, my driveway, and the wooded area (actually i just measured my grassy areas) it turns out I only had 16000 sq feet of actual grass which is like 1/3 of an acre.
