Soil pH adjustment for the season

I fear I over-limed my soil last spring, and its pH is now around 7.5. I am 7 or 8 weeks from putting out transplants (variety of spring crops), and I'm wondering what, if anything, I ought to do.

From my research it looks like I would have done well to incorporate some acidic organic matter like oak leaves or pine needles in the fall. But the fall is past, and I'd like to grow vegetables this year.

I don't necessarily want to try to "fix" this problem permanently. I just want to get through to the fall when I can re-test and try something that will have a longer term effect and build the soil. Ideas?

    Our native soil here in Madison, Wisconsin, has pH around 7.6, and we grow raspberries, tomatoes, swiss chard, green beans, parsley, brussels sprouts, broccoli, squash, and kale, successfully. I use agricultural sulfur to lower soil pH where the blueberries are planted, but I have never tried to lower the pH of the soil in our garden plot. The garden gets some compost every year, made from shredded leaves, yard waste, and kitchen scraps.

    The research I have seen is that Oak leaves and Pine needles do not significantly affect soil pH. While you do show a pH of 7.5 that is not significantly higher then the optimal 6.2 to 6.8 pH most plants, especially in soils with adequate levels of organic matter do not seem to be very affected. I'd not be too concerned.

    Nothing. I would have to really work at lowering the pH of my soil to get it that low, and the transplants do just fine.

    Thanks for the advice. Think I'll just give an extra healthy dose of compost in the spring and keep an eye on pH.

    I've been communicating with a soils scientist in FL recently about amending my calcareous soil with ag. S to lower the pH a bit and help free up micros., his comment, "NO". The doc. explained that the S will bad things, mainly, "dissolve" the soil by it's interaction with the carbonates and OM. The soil aggregates will be to some extent destroyed which will lead to less pore space and possible water infiltration problems, sort of like compaction. Guess I'll continue amending with OM:)

    Sulfur can flocculate (form clumping) soil when it reacts with CaCO3 and makes the Ca+ unbound and available in the soil. The CO2 gasses off. It's more of a function of the Ca+ availability than the sulfur, but it's the sulfur that makes this happen.

    It is a concern is some high calcareous heavy clay or heavy silt soils depending upon how much you're applying.

    This same "negative" aspect in some parts of the world is a positive in others...such as sand/clay soils common in the South-West and parts of the Mid-West.

    NC: I concur , Free Ca+ and CO2 (g) are the result. Oops, who'd have guessed that adding S to some soils can contribute to global warming?
