Does it say weed seed free? I'm not familiar with that brand, but the product I buy at Lowes says 'weed seed free' and so far it has been.

On doing a google search, I see that WF is a product of Scotts -- when I click onto the Steer Manure for more product information, it is stunningly unhelpful. The five-star rating is by "1 person". Hmmmmm. If the bag label is as unforthcoming as the website, no wonder you are asking for experiences from other organic users. That's a clue. is the product more expensive, with less information than the cheap stuff? Another clue.

Consider where this steer manure would come from, probably a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) and that the animals proabably are fed high doses of antibiotics to aid in weight gain and the source may not be an ecological one.

Whitney Farms has a rather limited distribution in parts of the west coast. The company that makes all the Whitney Farm products was acquired by Scotts-MiracleGro in 2005. Prior to that time, I would give a very high endorsement to any Whitney Farms product......very high quality, 100% organic. I used them often in my own garden. If given a choice, I would opt for the planting compost before the steer manure.

I have not purchased any new Whitney Farms products since the company's acquisition by Scotts, but that's more of a personal philosophical thing (I won't support that company) than it has to do with quality :-)

It's the best, IF you can find it.
