Given the square stem, I'd say it's henbit (Lamium amplexicaule), a winter annual weed in the southeast.

Aftermidnight is right, it's Deadnettle, Lamium purpureum. Don't know if it's used for anything.

Henbit has a similiar appearance....and is growing ALL over the place here in Northern Alabama! :-) But this is dead nettle, as stated.

Well, they ARE both Lamium. I didn't look up the botanical name of Dead Nettle or I would've realized that.

And yes, henbit is smothering lawns all over the place here as well. Or maybe it is dead nettle ....

Yes fresh or dried leaves can be used but read up on it before drinking quantities of it.
