hi, i have 2 oncidium twinkle "raspberry"",for years now.though i have repotted it with fresh bark over the years,it's in the same pot size.now i noticed that in one plant, the middle is dying out.why is this happening/do i need to repot again?there are lots of plants in the pot.should i separate some into separate plants or just grow them as is?thank you for any help you can give me.
The dying middle is the original growths dying out. You can divide it by removing the old dead part.
If it is in the same size pot I wouldn't separate it into more than two divisions. The plant receives nourishment from the old pbulbs so the more pbulbs, the stronger the plant.
If you separate the bulbs, make sure you have a minimum of three bulbs for each division. Five or more is better. Any less and you can set the plant back for years.
Make sure the new pots will just accommodate the roots and a bit more. Too large a pot can contain too much medium that will stay wet without enough roots to utilize the mosture, and the roots can rot.
