I remember my very first orchid, a hard cane dendrobium. Long time ago I received it as a gift and it was full of flowers. I had no idea what it was. After it bloomed, I was left with bare canes and bare spikes. Thought it was dead as a doornail.

Went into the compost bin. It was early Spring in NY and there was still snow on the ground.

Sometime in late Spring, I started turning the compost for the gardens and found the dead sticks. I noticed a small green growth poking out just like your Vanda.

I still have the offspring of that dend.

Unfortunately, there were many more plants which I wish had come back from 'the dead.'

I've got a phal Mini Mark that Kev'ed this summer/fall. Got crown rot early last year, threw spikes but never grew new leaves all summer. The 4 remaining leaves started dieing back in late summer, but I noticed just a nub of a kieke (maybe a 1/4" at the time). After misting the aerial roots 2x a week for the last few months, it's got 3 small leaves and is about 2" across now. I think I'll have a blooming plant in a another year!

I usually dump anything that I feel has a less than 25% chance of survival, (too little space/time for strugglers), but this was in a 3 1/2" pot and was able to get tucked out of the way in a corner with a little artificial light.

I'm to the point where I look forward to watering and checking on it's progress.
