Science fair result update

Don't mean to burden anyone with the blue ribbon results, but experiments are fun for me. We compared Scott's 10-10-10 to egg powder(7-1-0), to mesquite pod meal(2-0-2), to an unfertilized group. Non-fortified potting soil. Equivalent doses of nitrogen on beefmaster tomatos. One gallon container grown for 5 weeks, three reps/group. We measured height. The three unfertilized grew an average of 9.5". The mesquite pod meal averaged 16.5". The egg powder grew 22.8" and the Scott's grew 24.8". Please don't pick it apart...it was just a 4th grade science fair project.:)

I really thing you should get a ribbon for reporting the results. On these forums science fairs usually generate some late panic questions and we rarely, if ever, see the the results.

Well done.

One could say you've demonstrated the relative importance of P and K in early plant growth.

patty4150's right. I want to see pounds of fruit! I don't care how long the vines stretched. Lots of factors bear on that issue. But pounds of fruit per month is where the rubber meets the road. Of course it was a 4th grade project but this might help someone in high school decide what to do their project on.

What is egg powder? Crushed egg shells or the yolk/whites dried?

Just curious.

I agree that for my purposes I don't care which makes the plant grow fastest, I want fruit, but for a 4th grade science fair I think this is outstanding. Stuff like this just may teach a kid the value in natural/organic/healthy practices instead of just going with the masses to walmart and buying a bag of chemicals for everything.

Thanks for the comments...our experiment only went 5 weeks in one gallon pots, so as for the fruit, the mesquite bean put on one tomato and the Scott's had two...all three were about the diameter of a half-dollar. The growth trend curves were starting to turn towards "level". I don't know if that was because they were running out of N or putting on fruit. I have since transplanted them because I did not expect data "junkies" :) I have a picture of the plants but have not figured out how to post a pic(also will include the ribbon). Dchall, you ought to have a mesquite bean resource in your part of the world...try it..world's biggest natural legume crop. Username, it is inedible dried yolks and whites, no shells. But the question is...what is success in the eyes of a gardener? I can convict people of organic success with big asthetic plants without changing the knowledge base, so what is the answer to selling organic to the general public as the medium size less green plants put on almost as much fruit.
