should I repot?

HI,
I have this Phalaenopsis I received as a gift in June 2011. It had beautiful white blossoms with a purple center. After 2 months, all the blossoms fell and the stalk was drying and brownish. So I removed it. And beginning of fall, I repotted it with fresh bark and cut off bad roots. I water once in 10 days by dunking the pot in tepid water for 10 mins and then drain. Mist occasionally and fertilize.

My problem is the plant was floppy all winter. Now a new stalk has emerged and I feel the plant is on its side and not sitting up nicely. The leaves are firmer . Should I leave it be or should I repot? And also, there is a little bud coming on the side. I will know in a week or 2, but what do think it is? Root or another stalk?

Also when do you stake your spikes? When It is actually bendy or after it has grown fully and blooms?

Your little bud from the side is almost certainly a new root since this is a typical place from them to emerge. As you said in a couple of weeks you will know for certain.

Most spikes appear in the same area where your current spike is growing. On occasion a root will appear in the same place but root tips point down, spikes point up.

You may have an orchid that will not grow in an upright manner. The bark appears in great shape I would not bother with a repot. It looks healthy, you have a new root emerging and a spike growing, I would let it stay as is.

You can start staking the spike now. Use a twist tie around the spike but don't tie it very tight. You want to support the spike but not shut off the nutrition flowing to it.
