LB Drivel

Well, after 37 years I gave my babies some TLC this summer.I've used a pair of 8229A top belt drive LB's for at least six months a year since 1970. They each got new pistons, rings, floats, needles & seats, primers,

Points and condensers, governer kits, oil seals and gaskets. Because I planned to keep these forever (by the way, forever is a heck of a long time) I had bought these parts a LONG time ago when you could buy this stuff cheap.

These mowers have always used lawnboy oil at 16/1. This forum tells me there's probably better oil out there now but i'm half afraid to change now. I also bushed many oversized holes in the drive mechanisms. Tip for new users;LUBE EVERY rod and hole often. I was stupid and didn't. Now have wallered out holes to fix. Bushed origional wheels with oilite bushings and new bolts.

Other stupid things I didn't do was hose under the deck often. The acid in wet grass will do a number on Magnesium.

Mine are shaky but still usable. Chances of finding another one are slim and none.

Now a couple of questions......

Some time ago on this forum was some talk about machining the lower crankcase bushing out and replaing it with a needle bearing, Anybody remember this business? Walt?

Also my next project is a 1966 8224. The color is Spring Green. Anyone know a rattle-can paint that's close?

Thanks for reading my babble.............zeeker

Grabber green is pretty darn close.

Good job on the care of those LB over the years. I have a 8229 as well and enjoy the uniqueness of it.

As for the spring green color Are you reffering to the regular LB color or a lighter mint type color? If the latter I asked this question some time ago and really got little response. I found a can of "Kiwi" made by Krylon in the hobby section that is very close, the trouble was it was on clearance and I think the color has been discontinued.

Hey Neal, You are correct. I am asking about the Mint green color. It's kind of a pastel green. Grabber green fits most Lawnboys. Thanks

I can't find it on the Krylon color chart but I guess its still available in the "Home Decor" line of paints if that makes any sense to ya. I presume the Krylon company has different lines of spray paint and Kiwi #7410 is within that certain line.

I hope you can locate some, It was a pretty close matchup to one of my older D-400 units.

    Good luck, Neal

Hey Neal, I found a picture of that color and it sure looks close,BUT I've searched the web high on low and found SQUAT. I've e-mailed Krylon direct so we'll see.
    I'll let you know. Thanks..........zeeker

Krylon no longer makes #7410 Kiwi.
    any other suggestions?

You will have to take it to a body shop that does automotive paint. They can match it.

Otherwise I don't know. Good luck.

Do you have anything to match it to? You can go to an automotive paint store and they will computer match you some paint. If you don't have a spray gun, most will put it in aerosol cans for you. Might be a little more expensive, but it will be much better paint. If you spray it yourself, you can even use hardener in it, or better yet, step up to a urethane paint with a clear coat. You'd have the best looking lawn boy around.

I took a new piece of one of my "M" series mowers in to an automotive paint store and they computer matched it. I bought a quart of it in acrylic urethane. It mixes with a hardener and reducer. The color match was perfect and the paint is as tough as auto paint. Gasoline doesn't affect it at all either. The finish is beautiful.
In the past before I had paint equipment I had some color matched paint put in a spray can with the catalytic hardener. This was good for only a few hours but I got an automotive quality paint job without the use of a paint gun.

I found this the other day while doing a Google...

    Here's the RCM post:
    ----------------------------

Sometime back there was a post on the RCM newsgroup about repairing the Lawn Boy
"D" engine block when the lower bushing wears out. When this bushing goes, the
bottom seal fails and the gas tends to leak out of the crankcase instead of being
forced in to the combustion chamber, (this tends to make the mower somewhat "wimpy").

Lawnboy1.JPG shows 2 "D" engine crankcases after boring for roller bearings, the
case at the right is bored for a Torrington BH1412 bearing (which is the "F" engine
replacement), the case at the left is bored to accept a smaller OD Torrington roller
bearing (that's what I was given).

Lawnboy2.JPG shows what a typical setup might look like in a horizontal spindle
machine, (although the crankcase will fit quite well in a vise or on parallels in a
    vertical mill).

The fix involves removing the lower seal and boring the crankcase to accept a roller
bearing like the "F" engine has. The bushing in the "D" crankcase is cast into the
case during the die-casting process and is longer than the replacement bearing. The
existing bushing must either be bored .015" oversize, or completely bored out because
the process of counterboring may loosen the bushing and allow it to bind in the crank
bearing area causing the motor to seize.

After boring the bushing oversize, the case is counterbored to accept a roller
bearing, (as there are several bearings out there with a 7/8" ID I won't give
dimensions here). After machining, the bearing and seal are pressed in and you will
have a good crankcase again, (I asked the repair shop if they had ever seen the top
bushing go bad and the answer was "never").

Again the bearing for the "F" block is a Torrington BH1412, the seal is a CR 8624,
type CRW1 with an "R" lip code.

Hope this is useful to anyone fixing Lawnboys...
