Phenethyl Propionate safe for pollinators? (Cross posted...)

I use an "natural" lawn care firm and they have just started offering mosquito treatments using the same product they use ("Tick Killz") for tick control. The active ingredients are phenethyl propionate, cedarwood oil, peppermint oil and ethyl lactate. They assure me this product will affect only mosquitoes (and only live ones, not larvae so not sure how effective it will be?), but will NOT affect pollinators (bees, butterflies). They would mist the property for mosquitoes (they use the same product for tick control but then it is applied as a spray). I cannot find anything definitive confirming its safety for pollinators -- only a "low toxicity" statement. Does anyone know if misting the yard with this product will negatively impact pollinators (or where I can find out? I've checked EPA, other websites). I've worked hard for a pollinator-friendly garden and would hate to do anything to harm them now! But... the mosquitoes this year are just horrific, with all the rain we've had in the Northeast, and I'm not keen on a case of West Nile, either... Cross posted with "Insect" forum.

    There's little to no research done on Phenethyl Propionate and bees collecting pollen, though it is used to kill carpenter bees through direct contact spraying...so, well...

    It's used in a lot of beetle bait/traps...it's recently become popular with the organic bed bug and mosquito control industry.

    It's rather safe for humans/animals aside from skin/eye irritation.

    Anyone that tells you that a poison meant to kill one insect will not kill other insects probably does not know what they are talking about. I would think that the dirth of information about this product would be a red flag in itself.

    When phrased in that very vague and generalized manner that could very well be true. However, companies that focus on low-toxicity pesticides or natural/organic/biological (i.e. "minimum risk") pesticides generally have a pretty good idea how their product works and on what it works. And in most cases, a targeted insecticide has minimal, if any, impact on non-targeted species. To state otherwise is like saying any pesticide works equally well on any type of pest - just doesn't work that way!!

    As things go, plant essential oils (and that's what 2-phenethyl propionate is, a derivative of peanut oil) ARE pretty low key. But they have varying modes of action and that would determine how toxic or not they might be with other, non-target insects like most pollinators. Since this is still a very new arm of pesticidal science, there has not be enough literature generated yet to confirm these things. And as these are considered minimum risk pesticides they require no review or evaluation by the EPA "because their ingredients, both active and inert, are demonstrably safe for the intended use". If I were you and wanted to pursue this further, I'd go directly to the company:

    The company that produces a product to sell to you is not going to tell you whether it is really something you want, need, or even if exposure might not be the best thing for you or the beneficial insects in your garden. I have yet to see on the label of Carbaryl that it is toxic to bees and many other beneficial insects.
    While an organic grower may occasionally need an assist from a chemical, and Phenethyl Propionate is a chemical, making the soil the plants grow in into a good healthy soil that will grow strong and healthy plants will do more to limit insect pest attacks then any pesticide.

    This and peppermint oil (combined) is a very effective wasp killer. Since wasps do some pollinating, I would have to say that it's not pollinator safe.

    I sprayed some on a wasp and it struggled for less than a minute and died. But it requires direct contact.
