cattleya odor question ...

a friend gave me his very large and beautiful and well-loved and cared for cattleya. there were fragrant flowers. however, the other morning i woke up and my apartment smelled like urine, including the room i slept it - it is not a huge apartment, but it is not tiny either. i could smell it all day! i did not suspect it came from the flowers, but over the day i suspected, and read about orchid odors and learned that they are more scented at night and some indeed do smell like urine. but i never saw a reference to a cattleya smelling like urine. in any case, i kept my bedroom door closed and put small paper bags around the flowers overnight and the odor was indeed less the following morning. the next morning (today) i invited that friend to come for early coffee to discuss how intensely they stank up my apartment (he should know, right?) but now they barely smell at all - i do not see on-line that an intense odor passes after a couple of days. can someone tell me the nature of odor cycles of cattleya?
