and this is the close up.

as you can see the previous years flower stalks are still there!

I'm no expert but I'd say it's not dying at all...looks like those may turn into flowers? How does it normally flower? Maybe they are roots?

it flowers in a zig zag pattern up the stem.
and they can't be roots as the roots on a "pups" are white with a small green tip. I have had bad luck with orchids before I have finally found the right spot abd watering times.

I wonder if anyone else can suggest how to induce root growth? the rooting hormone?

and this is close up of "buds"

Your orchid is a nobile/softcane type of Dendrobium. It is about to bloom from nodes the side of the stem.
One of the specialist growers here gets new plants by laying the stem down in damp sand, some will make new growths (keikis) from unflowered nodes . Whatever you do it will be a long road back. You probably lost the roots by watering too much in winter which equates to the dry season where the ancestors of your plant grow in nature. Happy plants have one or two growth eyes at the base of the pseudobulbs/canes and start a new cane from there once flowering is complete.

it's the hybridised version it had 3 pups on, I removed the two that has roots that was 6inches long and the other one I left in place, to take over. I actually forgot to water it! when I went to remove the pups half roots just came off like pulling cotton balls apart. (so ease)

I left it as it still had a firm stem and leaves most of the leaves went yellow abd then brown and fell off the stem shriveled up so that's why I thought it was dieing. and I water my other orchids (one is a basic moth orchid and another is a pseudobulb one) I only water once a month with rain water and no fertiliser.

there is two "eyes" at the base of the stem that are a tiny bit bulged. so maybe that will turn into a pup?

Those are flower buds. You will get flowers. Leave it alone.

I don't know how you water that thing, but I do know that fertilizing with liquid sea kelp will help it root. I am using that with my phals and they are shooting new roots like crazy, as well as sending up new leaves and growing flowers 50% bigger. It would be worth a try...

it hasn't been watered since November. (and yes I don't know how it's still alive!)

I have contemplated. using seaweed food. but I just don't know as it doesn't have much nutritional value. maybe I will give it ago. will it say it has kelp? or is a element I am to look for?

    they are my other two.

It is alive because it comes from a monsoonal climate where it is cooler and drier in winter (when the plant does nothing, it is waiting for better times). Flowers in spring and the grows new canes in summer.
A beginner's orchid here in Sydney, Australia.
Read the Nobile Type Dendrobium cultivation notes written for UK in the link. Pot it up as recommended there, Feed it with a complete fertiliser so that it grows new canes in what equates as the monsoonal summer (warm and rainy).

Here is a link that might be useful: UK Orchid growing notes

Mine is called Liquid Sea Kelp...

Don't worry about fertilizer at this point. Get it in a pot and water it so you don't lose the flower buds.

Listen to Arthurm and read about the plant.

I dunk the root end into rain water once a week i'll upload image later of it now.

AS already suggested, I lay them flat in a tray of potting material. Any kind but sphagnum. Water it as if it was a potted orchid. It will root. When you see at least 3 healthy roots cut the cane of the pup so the pup is in the middle of the cane. Long enough to wedge the cane horizontally near the top of the pot. Then fill the pot with medium.

I use maxi-crop. It is Norwegian sea weed juice. There is a natural chemical, humic acid, a root stimulant. Works great. Good luck.

2 benefits. The pup can draw moisture and nutrition from the cane. No need of a rhizome clip.

What are you doing? This orchid needs to be treated as per the UK Cultivation notes. Forget about all this tropical stuff. It does not apply to this orchid in winter. Where it grew in nature there are two seasons, a warm, rainy summer and a much cooler drier winter, so dry that the monsoon forest loses leaves.
Look at the pic. The orchid is grown as a garden plant at a place a couple of K from here. The garden is in a dip on the edge of a frost hollow. Clear nights in winter there hover around 0C. The climate here (on average) is drier in winter and the arid westerly winter winds blow across the Continent, but the plant in pic. does get some dew plus some rainfall, sunshine and low humidity keep the plant mostly dry.
Get it into a pot, water it a few times a a week. Give it a feed with a complete fertilizer with trace elements. Seaweed is fine too.
Worry about the drier winter when Autumn arrives.

    that's it now.

Yes, and congratulations on getting blooms. That cane is just about bloomed out and your efforts should go towards getting new canes to grow.
    Here is my plant.
    {{gwi:165586}}
This is a variation of the species, not a hybrid.
Note that it is in a pot. It blooms from the growths made two seasons ago, whereas some of the modern hybrids will grow and mature a new cane in summer and autumn and rest during the winter, then bloom.
You have to take note of the seasons with this orchid. It requires totally different culture to say a Phalaenopsis.
Softcane growing temp outside at the moment = 15C
Phalaenopsis growing temp indoors at the moment = 21C.
Find some more culture notes that relate to Zone 8 or similar and go from there. Good Luck.

I noticed roots maybe forming on a bloom stalk! is it? if it is should I plant it to that point? (I'll upload images of whole cane)

    the base of cane

    the blooms

Sorry, somehow I thought that there were growth eyes at the base of the cane. Looks like it is flowering as a last throw of the dice. Do you have some keikis (baby plants).

The purpose of the posts above with photos was to get away from the tropical myth. Not tropical here in winter at all and no special skill to grow them at all.

In fact, I Killed one when I first started growing orchids ages ago. had it in a glass-house and maintained the minimum temp during winter at about 60F. Too much warmth and watering at the wrong time of year.

All you can do is lay the cane on a bed of sand and hope that a baby grows from one of the unflowered nodes. Not sure what will happen with the flowering node with roots. It will probably do nothing, you need leaves.

Tell us more about your growing conditions and maybe someone will offer better help.

The white flowers are so pretty.I hope you get some keikis.

    sorry for delay in reply!
the flowers are fragrant too! and the off petal has a blue spot on a tip.

so it sits on a eastern window cil gets sun in the morning from sun up till about 9am and it's all shade rest of day. I normally have window open day and night so it gets the hot and cold! it has two leaves on the top? but as the pseudobulb like stem is shriveling the leaves are starting to come away!

and it did put out two pups, I potted up both one is doing well tgw other lost its leaves but that pup put out a pup abd that's growing very well! :D
