Nutella

any of you heard of this? I stumbled across it the first time today in an article I was reading about guilty pleasures. A woman said she curls up in the corner with a jar of Nutella and a spoon when she's down and out. I just looked it up and it sounds as if it's been around forever and you can find in in the grocery store in the same section as the peanut butter. It's a mixture of chocolate, hazelnuts and skim milk. I think I've been living in a cave and just crawled out into the sunlight. I'll try anything once, unless it has beets in it.

Beets? Me too! I hear you're supposed to use Nutella just like you would peanut butter. I still haven't tried it. I've seen some really yummy cookies with it spread in the middle.

Here is a link that might be useful: Here's one recipe

Ok, now you have done it! Now I have to go in the kitchen and have a snack. Nutella is originally from northern Italy, spread (no pun intended) across Europe and has been in the States forever. Tasts great on anything which agrees with chocolate including eating it by the spoonfull.

I think of Nutella as British -- interesting to learn the Italian connection, anneliese. It's good stuff. Hubby, who loves hazelnuts and chocolate, eats it with a spoon.

On Saturday I ate a brownie at an Irish pub that was made with Nutella -- yummy!

When I checked it online earlier, the article said there are many copies, including one from Trader Joe's but none compare to the original.

I will eat nuts as a main course, or a snack, and put them in salads. IOW one of my major food groups. I'm nuts about nuts.

But........hazelnuts, and macadamia I can't stomach. Of course, Nutella is made with hazelnuts, as are the fancy little chocolates Ferraro Rochet. I can't gag them down. I would presume Nutella tastes like Ferraro Rochet, all ground up. If I walk past the television when the commercials are running for Nutella, I have to get out of there quickly, going LaLaLaLaLa so I can't hear it. But, if you like hazelnuts, I imagine you'd love both.

Have never once seen a commercial for it..that's weird. Maybe it's not a big East coast thing.

I discovered Nutella over 30 years ago when staying in Italy for college. It is to die for. I do not like it on bread like p-nut butter, just give me a spoon. Sorry Calliope, hazelnuts and chocolate are the best combo in the world to me. This is so weird because I had a jar of the stuff in my grocery cart and put it back because I couldn't stomach the $5 price tag and I knew I didn't need the cals. Plus, I had already indulged myself by buying a pint of black raspberries at an obscene price. They are at least good for you and seasonal.

Well..quick update. DH had to go out and asked if I needed anything from the grocery store. Says I..bananas and Nutella. As soon as he came home I took a spoonful. That stuff is pure heaven..so smooth and creamy. It reminded me of some of the fudge my father in law used to make with hazlenuts and as I was eating it I could picture it on top of some Hagan Dazs vanilla ice cream. This one is a keeper because it's perfect to satisfy a sweet craving very quickly and easily.

I never heard of it, but now I have to be on the look-out for it. Hazelnuts are my favorite, and they are really hard to come by. Hazelnut filled chocolate bars are sometimes available, much better than almonds IMO. I actually like almost all nuts, pecans are on the bottom of my list though.

I like dipping apple slices in it.

Marda, I've heard of it but never knew exactly what it was.
Thanks to you now I'm going to HAVE to try it.
I can see me now in the middle of the night reading my latest book and dipping a spoon into a jar of nutella. :0)

I have never heard of Nutella either - and I love hazelnuts. Cadbury's chocolate with hazelnuts, oh yes!

This is probably not on my eating list these days - but I have to taste it so I will be on the lookout for it. I don't buy peanut butter so I might never even have been close to it in the market.

It has an Italian ring to it...as in "Ah, Sophia, ma bella Nutella!".

Yes, it's Italian. It can be eaten like peanut butter, but DH will put it on ANYTHING!!

Funny, now that you mention it, I've never seen it advertised. We picked it up because Giada on the Food Network uses it a lot in her recipes. At my grocery store it can be found near the peanut butter and jelly.

    Give it a try.

I forgot to mention that it cost 3.05 at our store.

There is a chain of coffeshops called Le Pain Quotidien that has its own home brand of this stuff which I think is even better than Nutella. When Judy (JustJude) came from Pennsylvania to visit NYC a number of years ago we had breakfast at one of their shops on the Upper West Side, and were served it free, as a condiment alongside two kinds of jams and butter, with a French baguette. That and a deep bowl of hot chocolate and some slices of fruit made for a beautiful breakfast.

Most everyone who hates beets simply needs to try some of my homemade Ukrainian borshch. This has failed only twice to cure people of their beetophobia.

I checked the price at WalMart this morning and it was $3.36 for a small jar--maybe four ounces? Since it's an indulgence I know I don't need--I'm asking for a jar of it as a birthday present! :>)

    YUMMO

I just bought a 13 oz. jar for 3.79 and dipped pretzels in it. MMMMMM This is going to be a staple item in my cupboard. I also bought a jar of almond butter to try. That was pricey, but also delicious. Maybe I will make a Nutella, almond butter banana sandwich for lunch tomorrow.on toasted rye.

Variety is great and there are others beside peanut butter that may be more expensive but are worth it. Yum Good Shtuff Maynard.

I think Nutella is rather popular in Austria & Germany according to some friends of mine. Tried it when I was there but never found it here anywhere.

Good, good stuff! I do not share it with my children. :^)
