I use clay pots with lava rock or alifluor for s/h a lot! Works beautifully! I do this with phrags and ctsms - roots like crazy!

I think that as long as you maintain a proper water level on the bottom container, the s/h pellets will continue to wick up the water.
The extra ventilation on the clay pot will just mean more potential evaporation, but it can be countered by filling up the water reserve more frequently.
And if the clay pot is "naked" (unglazed or unpainted), the clay pot itself will also wick up water.
Perhaps the additional air exposure might even be better for the roots compared to the 2-hole s/h pots.

thanks! I don't know if this Florida heat will make watering a REAL headache. The hydroton looks dry all the time, and because the clay pots are not see thru- I don't know how the roots are.
