Hey Scott361!

Hi Scott,

I just acquired a C. Trianaei 'Aranka Germanske' division. Long story short, one of the bulbs has 2 leaves and all leaves are not as thick compared to my other C. Trianaei plants --- I read somewhere that a mature C. Trianaei leaf will crack/break if it is rolled/bent because of its thickness and this is what distinguishes it from C. Schroderae. This made me suspect that what I have now is not the real deal.

Do you have pictures of your C. Trianaei 'Aranka Germanske' plant somewhere on the web that I can take a look for comparison purposes? I am curious of the leaf shape as well as the overall plant appearance.

Thanks!

With kind regards,

Harvey

    Nope!
I'll try and take one tomorrow.
First, I'm going to have to find it!
I'm pretty sure that it's around here somewhere! ;~)

PBI_ Scott your pictures are amazing. Am I safe to assume you are a professional? If not or even if so, what type of camera do you use?
    Thanks!

    Here you go, Harvey!
I've got that one new growth and at least two eyes opening soon.
I never got around to repotting it and not sure when I will.
It's supposed to a division of an original plant from the Pabst collection.
I haven't bloomed it yet, but the seller is reliable.

    Professional what? ;~)

Thank you for the complement! (blush!)
Considering some of the comments I used to get about my photos, I'd hardly call myself a Pro!
It's all trial and error for the most part.
I've never found the time to learn what I'm doing or how to do it better.
    Maybe some day!
    I'm using a Canon Rebel XTi (EOS-400D).
I switch back and forth between lenses.
Generally, I either use a Sigma 180mm f3.5 APO EX DG lens or a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro.
These quicky shots were with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 MK1 that I picked up a little while ago.
I just got the Canon 100mm lens in May and still haven't learned what I'm doing yet.
If I ever actually do learn! ;~)
My eyes glaze over when I try to read the technical stuff!

Some of my older photos were taken with a kodak Z740.
I added an extension tube and a wide angle macro to it.
It helped, but it was still difficult to do many of my Pluero-types.

After I posted the photos, I re-read what you said.
"...,one of the bulbs has 2 leaves..."
What do you mean? You actually have two leaves on each pseudobulb?
    C. Trianaei is a unifoliate!
    If yours has two leaves...well, it's not a C.trianaei.

Thank you so much for your pictures. Your Aranka looks really healthy and that new growth might be blooming next winter.

    C. Trianaei is classified as a unifoliate. In my plant, the two leaves occured only on one pseudobulb. This "freak" characteristic also happened on one PB of my C. Mossiae coerulea (a 12+ PB plant). I am suspecting that it may be a light or environmental issue where the bloom sheath becomes a secondary leaf.

Looking at your picture, I see some similarity. I will post some pictures after I repot it --- I'm hoping that it will bloom this coming winter so that I can check its flowers.

    With kind regards,

    You're certainly welcome, Harvey!
I'm still not sure how much help I've been.
I've only had mine since last October and haven't had it bloom yet.
Although I really increased the light levels this winter, they were kept on the neglected side of dry.
They get a little 'shrivelly', but new growths do better for me.
Sounds like you have more of a radiation problem! ;~)
Sometimes sports are interesting. Isn't that what named cultivars are?
A notable difference or improvement that is liked. Just a random thought!

    You might ask Richard!
I'm not positive, but it's likely that he has at least one of these. Probably one of the same divisions, as well! ;~)
He , or someone else, might have more info or a better photo!

By the way, I just picked un another cool Trianaei division, from the same seller.
I wasn't thrilled about the price, but I really, really had to have it! Whatever makes you happy, I guess!

LOL :) I think I know who you mean. Did you get the var. 'Buga', 'Jungle Queen' or 'Muy Clara'? I think the first one has an Aranka-like flower shape. By the way, how many C. Trianaei cultivars do you have now?

With some luck, my C. Trianaeis and C. Mossiaes are growing like weeds under my windowsill setup with supplemental lighting. I'm also trying my hand right now in growing other species catts --- I recently got a C. Gaskelliana coerulea and C. Percivaliana 'Ondine'.

    Thanks!

    I got the 'Buga'!
    Almost sounds infectous! ;~)

I really liked it and the bidding on the others was too painful! I just knew that I should have bought more from him last year!
All of the investment bidders/breeders(?) have really driven up his and many others prices.
It's always the same group of names bidding on the best plants and driving the prices way up!

    This is my curent group!
Cattleya trianaei (from Venezuela by Jay Pfahl)-
    Cattleya trianaei var alba ÂJEM-StudÂ-
    Cattleya trianaei 'A.C. Burrage' AM/AOS-
Cattleya trianaei var amesiana (ÂWenzel #1Â x ÂWenzel #2Â)-
Cattleya trianaei alba ÂAranka Germanski FCC/AOS-( division of an original plant from the Pabst collection)
Cattleya trianaei 'Buga' (field colected from Buga area)
    Cattleya trianaei (ÂMariposa x ÂBinotiiÂ)-
    Cattleya trianae ÂMooreana FCC/RHS, AM/AOS-
    Cattleya trianaei var semi-alba-

That 'Ondine' is a really nice one!
    Drool! ;~)
I've had a photo of one saved in my files for a long time and it's on my want list. I have a 54MB file of just Cattleya cultivars saved.
Photos/cultural info and historical value, etc. The Bulbo and Pluero files are even larger.

If you want and haven't seen it, here's a link to a pretty accurate list of what I try to grow.
    Emphasis on try!;~)
    It's sorta' organised!
It's also scary that it's this big, as I've only been really into them for a few years.

    Hi Scott!

Here's a picture of my C. Trianaei 'A.G.'. Finally, it is able to throw new roots on all its new growth

    {{gwi:179169}}

As you can see, the PB with two leaves is near the right hand side of the picture. Anyways, I hope I can bloom it this coming winter to verify its authenticity...

    'later,
