let's talk cats,..

since they occupy about 99% of my time, i guess that's a legit subject.

has anyone tried those cloth 'cubes'they have for cats yet ? i got one at wally world for about $4 .they are pretty basically designed . just a 'cloth' box with holes in it and metal supports so it doesnt fall apart. my cats love it. they fight to get in it and when one finally wins out, they others try to get on top. that doesnt work real well. they have the darn thing bent already, not to mention ripped...cat's really are ungrateful things arent they?

Tell me about it. I had a cat break an "unbeakable" cat toy in 20 seconds flat.
Heres a funny one esp for those of us who know cats. A friend is going to some sort of healer and she mentioned that her cat loves to knead and stand on her belly scars. The healer told her it was bacause the cat knew her stomach was injured at one time and was trying to heal her. HAHAHAHAHAHA is if cats could give a rats arse about our health.

Cats are wonderful aint they? Dogs are too. And sugar gliders, or capuchin monkeys or whatever pet you have! So what do your furbabies look like? What are their names? Sounds like they appreciated you. Otherwise, they could've turned up their snooty cat noses. :)

I just gotta tell my cat thing. There's a person on That Home Site's Decorating forum, who has my cat's doppelganger! Her cat's name is Keefer. My cat's name is Keegan. They look like they came from the same litter. I noticed this yesterday. They have the samemarkings, coloring, tails, paws, you name it.

Here's her Keefer kitty in the foreground (along with his bud, Aubrey):

g, I've never had more than two cats at one time and they ignored one another, one reigning over back yard and the other out front, demanding separate feeding bowls, and when inside chose separate laps and sleeping spots. So I want to ask:

Do yours separate out into gangs or all mingle? All get along? Feeding time must be a zoo...lol Any picky eaters? Do some favor one human and some the other? I rarely could read without a cat wanting to lay a paw or tail over my book...how in the world do you cope? And we want pictures! josh

My Midnight, or as we call her, Her Royal Highness, sleeps anywhere except in anything which might be a designated cat sleeping spot, and it better not have a blanket, anything terry cloth or knit. She also changes sleeping place about every 2 hours.
As to kneading a sore spot, Midnight slept on my stomach after I had surgery. She had never done that before. After two follow up surgeries she did the same thing. Once my incisions healed, she stopped and has not done it since.
She also decided that she had to become my trainer and get me back in shape. We have one of those darned split level homes and she always needs to go to the door which is the one opposite from where I am. If I stand at the front door, she has to go out the backdoor and if I don't listen, I get spanked.

I just lost by beautiful little three-legged blue cat this summer to cancer. I have her daughter, who is a white masked, white booted blue cat of about nine, and I have my Tom, good old fat tabby Hobbes, who is fifteen and who was just diagnosed with an abdominal mass. Then I have my ancient nineteen year old siamese/tabby Satikosan. She is my shadow, and we are conjoined at the soul. I awaited her at the animal shelter, because I heard she was coming in as a kitten who found her way to the back door of a church, when the ladies were inside preparing a meal for the congregation. They fed her oatmeal, lol. When she hit the shelter, I was there to pick her up and bring her home.

Yes, I believe she knows when I am not well, and even though she is my shadow, when I am not at my peak, she insists upon being attached to my body. If I try to take her off, she spits and hisses and digs in. She is right here now on my puter desk, like she always is when I am surfing. They have a sense and will insist on nurturing their human.

Then I have dear old Deitz, who was my mother's cat, who ended up at my daughter's farm, who ended up in my chicken shed living inside a milk can, who ended up back at my mother's, who ended up back here with me, now inside only. He has to be at least fifteen.

There is an hierarchy, and each cat has claimed certain rooms of the house, and with whom they'll associate. Satiko hates everyone but me and she hates all the rest of the cats. Period. Hobbes loves everyone and all the cats, but is especially fond of me and the dog. Calvinette is autistic, if one can hang a diagnosis like that on a cat. She wants to be loved, and included, but doesn't make eye contact, and melts away from touch. She approaches the other cats, and starts to interact, but it always ends up with swats and hisses. Dietz is a little fart. Period.

Ive found male cats get along much better than females. That is unless someone chews off someones eyebrows and someone spends the next 12 yrs getting over it.

LOLOL Pam, I was drinking tea when I read that. I think you're right, the females are more intense and not so lain back. I awoke this a.m. to big old Hobbes, up on my bed, patting my face with his big old flam to awaken me for his breakfast. He needs his toenails trimmed. It hurt.

i think some cat's care about me more than others do...some only care when their next meal is coming.
one thing i am sure of tho, about cats....they all have the same father! my cat's all have the same basic, ' me first' attitude. and yes, jo, they fight with each other. i dont notice that they pair up tho, except one son and his mom. they may sleep together on a cold night but outside, it is each cat for himself.
that's the only bummer about letting cats own us...they do eventually die. half my crew is old and the other half fairly young.
caliope, how in the world did deitz wind up living in a milk can? i have one who lives under my sofa, but a milk can?
pam, most cats 'tolerate' each other only if nuetered. and of course a tom will cuddle up to an unspayed female if the time is right..LOL
i would love to send a pix, but i dont know how to put them in the message as you do...wanna teach me? :oD

I saw those cubes and thought I'd like one or two or three in winter for my cats. They use boxes lined with newspaper set around the wood stove. I thought the cubes would give them a little less of the homeless look. I have six cats and boxes are free....I'm sure those cubes wouldn't last a night. LOL

My daughter has one of those cubes for her three cats. They run across the room and fling themselves into it. They also vie for whom is going to play in it. Obviously they love it. I'm like you acorn. Cats are like little kids. They'll take the toy out of the box, throw the toy down and play with the box. I've also found Dietz the cat will claw on cardboard boxes in preference to furniture upholstery. He won't use a purchased cat scratch post.

G'Ann..........I took in my DD's animals when she was between moves and Dietz had been a farm cat, IOW outdoors. So, he took shelter in my large chicken coop. He was a small cat, and my Hobbes was jealous of him. He would hunt him out to torment. I had a couple of big old Amish steel milk cans in the shed, and one was on end. Dietz was small enough to hide in there, and fend Hobbes off. That's when my mother found out, and took Dietz back to her house, where he started off. She rescued him, he was an alley cat.

My best friend had a cat once that cured the (I'd love to
have a cat.)for practically the whole town. Well, at least
the townfolk that made the mistake of stopping by for a visit.
Her name was Gladys and mothers would not let their children
walk past the house if Gladys was outside and forget getting any Girl Scout cookies.

Gladys was known as that Bit@h that lives on Sunset Circle.
Delivery persons would quake in fear when they had to make a delivery and the postman requested a mailbox at the street.
She would saunter into a room and approach you with that
I'm a sweety look about her and then she'd rip your nose
right off your face or slash your leg to ribbons before you
could make it to the door.
I thought she would outlive us all but she finally checked out and I think her people were glad to see her go.
Where ever she is, I'm sure she's terrorizing everything
    around her.

My friend had a cat that was such a sweetie, would purr, curl between your legs, roll over and let you pet her/him, yep very sweet cat...............until you went to the bathroom and then this sweet ball of fur would lay in wait and attack you the moment you stepped out of the door, claws out, slashing at your ankles! My friend never figured out why the cat would let you go in, but did not like it when you came out!

Taffy is my baby-boy. He came into my care at about three weeks old, his ears had not even been unfolded and his eyes were barely opened not really focused yet. He was fierce, bit the nipple off a couple of bottles, but he does love me, I am his Mom. He's three years old and still thinks my feet are his favorite toys.
Yet he's a hunter, spends much time outside, but sleeps on my bed most nights.
My vet explained that of course, I was not an effective cat-mom, if he tried to bite the nipple off his food source, she would have beaten the crap out of him, and that was the trouble with many of the bottle babies: no mom and no litter-mates to teach them cat-manners. I guess they are correct, because the earlier ones, Sooty and Bud (RIP) were inter-acting very different, and litter-mates Jasmyn and Maximus are much more gentle. But no matter, I bear the scars proudly. I love them all.
But then, how would a human be able to beat the crap out of a teeny weeny little ginger/orange kitty?

Ahh yes, cats. We currently have 8, long story, but it involves 6 of them being part of our working to keep a feral cat population from developing when a neighbor threw a litter of grey kittens out of her house. Those 6 we call 'the greys'. All different variations of grey or grey with white boots and chest spots. Some med long haired, some short. Quite a variety. Serious inbreeding, but all are healthy and beautiful. Our two oldest cats are Leo [black] and Sammie [orange]. The greys came into the household in dribs and drabs, so the dynamic changed over the course of a couple years. Sammie is a little liver shunt guy, who thought he was king of the house. When the greys started to invade he started marking. Scrappy started giving him a hard time too, as well as two other really passive males, Spot and Fluffy. Soooo, about 3 yrs ago we moved Sammie, Spot and Fluffy up to our bedroom suite. It is two large adjoined rooms. They get along fine and no more spraying. They also get to sleep with us and with me during naps, so they seem to enjoy their territory. The other 5 do fine together. Leo tends to ignore most of the greys, but the youngest, Misty, likes him and follows him around. Smiles. None of them walk around with a pacifier though. Oh, scratching. None will use any kind of post but do like cardboard. Have you seen those flat cardboard things they sell? Well for Xmas I take a bunch of boxes and cut them with utility knife and make homemade ones for them. They all like them. BTW, all cats are indoors only. Heck it's only 4 litter boxes to clean. LOL... Poor Christy.

coconut. how good to see your still here. i cant see your name w/o thinking of my grey sweetie, cokie, or of tastycakes...:o)
and i am glad to see you are doing your part to keep the stray cat population down.you have a kind soul..
i have a cat that bites. with him it is an effection/dominance thing. he never bites hard and it is always when he is in his 'play' mode.
LOL about the bathroom game lindaj. my cats do that to each other. if one hears the other in the litterbox, he will hide at the door and when she comes out of the bathroom he jumps on her. i never could figure out what that is all about.
dont ya wish sometimes that they could talk?.....ahhhh, maybe not...
lilod, people who beat animals are sick. i have gotten mad enough at a few of mine to want to give mine a good swat tho.

There was a feral female that hung out at our business. Kept down the rats in the storeroom. Had kittens by the dozen as often as possible. She would not tolerate any human contact. No petting, no stroking, nothing. It was as if she hated two legged creatures.

We brought her home to recuperate after having her spayed. I was stretched out on the recliner on heating pads, trying to ease the back pains when she very unexpectly jumped up and started kneading my stomach. She made it plain I was NOT to touch her while she worked away at my body.

Maybe there is something to the Healer's idea of cats healing. After she kneaded me for a while, she curled up on my tummy and went to sleep. She never did anything like that again.

Well then they try to heal you one day and the next day they try to murder you by planting a hind foot smack dab in your eyesocket while using your head as footstool.....

I still miss Trina, who was the last feline to live with us. DH (averring he had no patience for cats) was wrapped around her little paw; as if I never noticed who was feeding her tidbits at dinner. And she *was* little, weighing in at 5¼ pounds on her fattest days, but mostly not quite 5 pounds.

This is the one who, upon her return from the neutering visit, climbed up onto the hall table and whenever a person went by, she would sit up and pat the bandage on her tummy and wail, "Me ower, me ower!" That little cat required a lot of sympathy for her 'owie'. BTW, it was ten years before she ever said that again; holding her cut paw out, "Me ower!"

She ruled the local cats with velvet-covered steel claws -- and Sam (an 18 pound neighbor) was her enforcer. A memory is of her sitting squinch-eyed in the sun on the top step, and going downwards would be Sam, Snowflake, Callie2, BigBlack, and Mister, each on their own step. Suddenly, she rises and then gracefully flows down the steps and, like a well-rehearsed chorus line, as she passes, the other cats rise and follow her. They stream in silent indian-file across the lawn and over the fence to inspect A's ivy, doing guard duty on the hunt for moles.

Another memory is of her sitting on DH's lap, studying a tennis game on TV. World Series? I don't remember, only that the game seemed to go on for hours. A few weeks after that, she invented her own version of tennis. Sitting in the wooden rocker, she would swat at the foil ball tossed to her. I mean, she'd sit on haunches, left paw out (she was a lefty) and bounce a bit until the ball was in reach. Then, Wham! with a swing that would have pleased Chris Evert, the ball would be sailing back to the server; not too many foul balls and a truly wicked line drive. It pleased her to see us doing a tummy-slide to catch the ball before it rolled under the sofa. Matches would continue until we were exhausted-- I mean, do you have any idea how many times an hour you can toss a ball when your opponent never misses?!

I just checked back. G'ann, in order to post a picture, it's a three step process. First and foremost, you have to upload your pictures to your computer. There are numerous ways to do so, let us know which way if you need for it be clarified. Second, you have to add the picture to website which hosts photos, such as Flikr, Photobucket, SmugMug, etc. Last, you copy the link from the photo hosting website in this manner:

    "img src = "http://www.mylink.com/picture1.jpg";

But adding "" at the end with no quotes and change the link to the proper address.

I'll show you with my picture:

Take the link which looks like this:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v481/Rob333/stuff/Keegan002.jpg

and add around the link (the only space is inbetween img and src):

    It becomes:
    {{gwi:135908}}

Here is a photo G'ann sent me of her cats.

{{gwi:181920}} Holey Moley..I'm going to get some stock in one of the kitty litter companies when I find out what kind she uses.

calliope, I always subscribed to the "If your dog sleeps next to you, it's because he worships you, if your cat sleeps next to you, it's because you're warm" school of thought...

until one summer when my heart, for some reason I can't remember any more, was broken.
    shattered.
    I was bereft.

& it was a hot Texas summer.

Nontheless, I woke up one night to find all 4 cats sleeping with me, full body contact.

    They knew.

Me Too! bet she uses a lot! LOL!

hey mayda, remember way back when you were teaching us how to do things on the web? i printed all that stuff and still have it in my files. i am going to fish it out and see if i cant do this myself.
rob333, i tried what you said but i think the link was too long. it went over a line and a half.
still gonna work on it tho.

I still have Linda Js directions for copying a pnoto off the Web and turning it into stationery. I still don't have the path memorized after all these years.

It can be many lines lone G. Try it and see...

i would love to send a pix, but i dont know how to put them in the message as you do...wanna teach me? :oD

G'Ann, sometimes I use the html code, but most people just offload their pics to a photosite like Photobucket. You just click your mouse and it's copied along with the code and you paste it in your message.

boy i must be the dumb person still walking, then. i used photbucket and it took so long to even figure out how to get a pix to there that i plain gave up after the first one ( the one marda put in this thread). i guess i need to go back when i have mega time and read the instructions, cept i didnt see any instructions........

I have to laugh about the holistic healer thinking that the cats know if the person has a malady. The reason the cats are kneading the woman's stomach is because they think she is their mother. Kittens will knead a mother cat to help her lactate. I think holistic healing has its place, but some of them are way out there in left field.
