Forum question

I'm pretty internet-savvy, but I can't figure it out...how do you post a picture in your message?

Photos are supposed to go in the Orchid Gallery forum.

That's what I did yesterday but today I was browsing and I've seen a couple of posts with people's photos right in the post. That seems a lot easier than what I did-had to post two pictures on the Gallery, wait for them to show up, post links, then hope people take the time and effort to go look!

You can imbed images in your post by using the following command. First you have to upload your images somewhere (I use imageshack.us)
Then you imbed the pictures with this command

Don't type the parenthesis or put any spaces between the

However, you are creating time-out problems for people who are, for various reasons, on dialup rather than high-speed internet. Not everyone has a choice. That's why this is a 'discussion' forum rather than a photo/high graphics forum; so that everyone can participiate more or less equally and enjoy the discussions. Call it good manners.

Oh, I happen to be on cable so it is not a problem for me, but I do have some regard for others.

Well sheesh, it's not like I'm going to post 10 pictures to every message! I just wanted to know how, since the other way was very time-consuming and I only have internet at work so it took forever between phone calls.

If nobody minds, I just want to try it. If this works, it's my dachshund puppy, Lolly. I promise, i won't do this very often!

Lolly is a doll but she looks a little miffed at you for snapping her picture!

Since I am of the opinion that pictures enrich discussions (assuming the poster is not trying to just show off :) ), the other option for posting pictures is to create a hyperlink to them. This does not slow down the page load so both sides win.

To create a hyperlink use the following code:
    YOUR_TEXT_HERE

    For example:
    Dachshund Puppy

    will create the following hyperlink:
    {{gwi:182560}}

Now here comes the fun part. If you really really really want to add a picture to your post you can add a thumbnail. To do this you need to create two copies of your image: a normal sized one (like the one you have) and a tiny one (this will be your thumbnail - since it is small it shouldn't cause loading problems). Now use the following html and your thumbnail will show up, note that this is just a combination the two techniques described above.

    HTML:

    Example:
    {{gwi:182562}}

Now you can almost call yourself a computer programmer :)
    Best,
    Jem

PS. Don't forget to remove the spaces after each

Good solutions, Jem. That's how I do it when I want to display a photo, with a hyperlink.

Oh and your puppy is adorable!

Thanks for the tips, that hyperlink is a good compromise. Just to test it, here's a picture where Lolly really IS mad at me:

Thanks for the compliments, I think she's pretty adorable too! She's only one of my three dogs, but she's pretty special. She's really smart and bossy and opinionated, but she's also sweet and cuddly and loving. She's only 6 months old but we've already started training for agility competition. I just love rher to death!

    Oops sorry, got pretty off-topic!

I find that dog disturbing. Tooth and claw with devil eyes. And yet, kind of cute. However, I'm glad I have lots of Angs and no dogs.

    Hey Mr. B,

Angs don't show you "love", man...a dog does with every fiber of its being.. :)

Hey, Lolly isn't evil! Well yeah, okay, she's a little bit evil. but she's also a champion kisser and won't sleep anywhere but in my lap. She also loves to play tackle with my cat!

I've got a youtube video of her playing with my mom's GSD...she's fearless....

    Lolly and Travis

The voices in the background are my mom, my aunt, then me.

Oh so cute! The GSD is really a "gentleman"!

He really is, and you know what's funny? Mom adopted Travis 3 1/2 years ago from a GSD rescue, and we were told that he killed a cat and that's why his previous owners gave him up. They claimed that he was aggressive with all small animals, and recommended she never let him around small animals or dogs, and until this year she's been terrified he'd kill a small animal if he got loose, even though he's usually the sweetest dog in the world.

So, during April I had to live with my mom a month, in between moving to a new apartment, and had my 3 dogs with me. Well Travis is in LOVE with my greyhound Moya but he and my JRT butt heads and will fight, but that's my JRT's fault. And Lolly was so tiny, only 3 1/2 months old, we just kept her and Travis apart. But one night there was a terrible storm and a tornado touched down very close to my mom's house, and me, my mom, Travis, and my 3 dogs all had to hunker down in the laundry room. I was holding Lolly, and I looked down and she and Travis were licking each others' faces, acting like long-lost buddies! We let them play together after that, and I take her over there for play dates all the time. Small-animal aggressive, my foot!

Sorry, didn't mean to get so off-topic!

Hate to "bust your bubble", Dusty, but these pictures and discussion would be better posted on the "conversation" side of the forum. This side deals with orchid related subjects, whereas on the conversation side, just about any subject, including pets, recipes and even jokes are welcome. That's where we solve personal and world problems, or do amateur counceling. Next time.....??

Alberta, I know the difference; this actually started as an orchid-related topic because i want to be able to post orchid pictures once I have them, i just didn't have any to test with. I did apologize for getting off-topic, more than once. I didn't realize it would upset anyone.
