It may be Solanum dulcamara.

Here is a link that might be useful: Solanum dulcamara

same shrub

Are you certain the flowers are actually growing on the shrub - or could it be a vine growing through the shrub? It does look like Solanum dulcamara, but that is a vine.

Big apologies here. The vine Solanum dulcamara, is growing through the shrub. The second picture is the shrub, and I don't know what it is either.

Shrub looks like Philadelphus.

regarding the nightshade.. at the link provided.. insure these parts register:

====

It is an invasive species in the Great Lakes region and was first spotted in 1843.

====

However, the berry is poisonous to humans and livestock, and the berry's attractive and familiar look make it dangerous for children. The foliage is also poisonous to humans.

==>>IMHO ... kill it now ... exactly what could be the upside to it ....

ken

i agree that the shrub is Philadelphus, there should be white flowers opening very soon - mine is blooming now in Columbus.

Thank you everyone. Tomorrow I will remove the toxic plant.

The shrub looks a lot more like Hydrangea paniculata than Philadelphus to me.

Agree it's not Philadelphus. I don't know H paniculata well enough to judge but if bboy says that's it it almost certainly is.

I thought I's give you a look at the whole shrub. The shrub in question is to the right of the bird bath. Does that help to ID it? Isn't H. paniculata a climber? I just moved here in January. Wouldn't the previous owners have put it against something to climb?

I googled H paniculata...not a climber. Ooops

Maybe you were thinking of Hydrangea anomola subsp. petiolaris commonly called H petiolaris.

If you're one of the unfortunate very few people sensitive to the nightshade, Solanum dulcamara, it can give you a rash. Not nearly as miserable as poison ivy, but I would encourage you to wash your hands/arms well after pulling that out.

Gloves are your friends when dealing with nightshade, mugwort, and some of the other charmers out there.

Agree that it's a healthy young paniculata, which should be glorious in August.
