Fig Tree's

Last year I planted a 4' fig tree here on Long Island. At the end of the season, I covered it with a heavy plastic tarp. Come Spring, it appeared to be dead, but I noticed a single live bud neat the trunk base, so I let it be.

It came back and grey sever branch's so the root is still alive and well. This fall, after most of the leaves were gone, but before the first heavey frost, I covered it with a plastic garbage can, weighed down with some cobblestones and tied it to a stake - to keep it all steady until next Spring.

Years ago, my grandfather who came from italy, had large, healthy fig trees that did well every year. They may have been imported from Italy or perhaps he brought them over with him.

My question is, has anyone had good success with fig trees in the Northeast and how do you protect them over the Winter.
