a mystery

I have an orchid here that I picked up at a plant service that gives away retired plants. It was not in bloom, but my guess is miltoniopsis, judging from the color of the foliage, etc. I've had it for several months and it is actively growing right now. I've noticed in the last week a fragrance emanating from the plant. Kindof like cinnamon. Very sweet and pleasant, but the plant is not in bloom! Are the plants themselves actually fragrant? I find this to be really odd. If I sniff the soil, it smells normal, but I put my nose in the center of the plant and the fragrance is strong. I can now smell it from about 2' away in the warm afternoon. Any ideas?
