Sheryl: can you slice open a potato and ID the bug? Off hand it sounds like slugs, which bore holes in my potatoes when I store them in the ground. I don't know what a grow box is, but might the soil in it have contained slugs eggs? This is wild speculation. Anyhow, the ID is necessary to come up with an appropriate remedy. Regards, Peter.

I tossed the potatoes before I thought of looking inside them. I did however, see some slugs in the garden last summer. The Grow Boxes were new so there were no previous slug eggs.

I think you you have Wire worms. You can sometimes have them in un-tilled soil.I do not know why but if you till or plow the ground a few seasons they leave.I had my first potatoes look great then i noticed these really small holes and a light brown worm. I had never seen one before but found them on the web at a Rodale site.

Storing potatoes in the refrigerator is not recommended. It is best to store them between 45 and 50 degres. The temperature in the refrigerator is so low that it causes the starch to convert to sugar and the potatoes become sweet.

Last year was dry year & I did not water my potatoes, only other vegetables.

Some of my potatoes had holes in them, I made then slices to find the bugs, no bugs.

But the slices looked like a shot gum blast had hit it & sprayed tiny holes in it.

I ask another white potato grower, he said it was fire ants get the water out of the potato & the best was to stop them was to water the plant & the ant would get the run off.

WELL---DUR.

Now I know, if you do not have Fire Ants, then it is something else.

If you do not know you have fire ants, then you do not have them.
