Weekend journal

Four out of five walls are now framed for the new closets. We tried to hang drywall over the existing ceiling, in hopes of having a finally flat ceiling, but that may have been worse than taking down the crap that was already there. And it was very frustrating. You should see the number of holes he and I both put in it! I picked out the wire shelving system (this one has several possible configurations) and some canvas baskets (mine are 2 dark brown with a blue strip on the top and 2 that are light brown, dark brown, and the same blue as the strip on the other baskets, except these are striped) to go in the master bedroom closet. I already have the paint, but flooring was questionable so I didn't get that. I think we decided on a somewhat reasonable, somewhat cheap ($0.81 per square foot) rug that has the colors of the paint and baskets. And I cleaned. I'm so tired of drywall dirt and dust everywhere. The thermostat is driving me crazy. Ed lost the cover and broke the little knob on the hot cold part. Worse, it's being persnickety now. If you don't know, mercury switches don't like being touched... ever. This one has been knocked around, dropped on the ground, things dropped on it, covered in insulation, drywall, and dust... it's not happy. I also did laundry, went to the grocery store, and had dinner/movie with my mom. We saw Madagascar2. Predictable, but good oneliners, just like the original.

For the master bedroom, I need is for my bubba to come put in the wiring for the light. Right now, I could finish screwing in the drywall, mud it, sand it, and paint it (that's a day's worth of work--done in one evening, first screwing it down then mudding it. Next it dries overnight. The other half day is spent sanding and painting). Then hang the wire shelving and fill the closet with clothes, shoes, shirts, bags... Not too bad. Might even do the first half day of drywall tonight. The washer/dryer closet has quite a bit left. It needs massive wiring and vent work. But once it's done, another of those day drywall half day/half day things, put up wallpaper that is already adhesive and put down vinyl tiles. The wallpaper is not directional, therefore, it'll only take a couple of hours, and the floor, maybe a half hour. It's 2 tiles X 4 tiles=8 tiles. So not too bad.

One project that has taken more than a year and the next is a month-month and half. Once it's done, the master bedroom can expand and get flooring. It is coming along. I'm ready to finish odds and ends, so I can just sit back a bit. I'm on the downhill side. And I'm on the downhill side of school. Only 6 months left (I HOPE they don't tell me to take any more classes! I'm still waiting). And the diet is on the downhill side; I've lost 22 pounds. I bought my new smaller jeans to celebrate; yea no more baggy jeans! I have little goals within the big goal. The big goal is my medically ideal weight, that which I weighed in college. I just passed the more than 20 pounds lost mark, and I'm smaller than I have been in the past 5 years. I have 4 pounds left to be more than halfway through, and the smallest I will have been in ten years (that is just after pregnancy). Next, I will have to lose 17 more to lose to be prepregnancy size. That will have to be when all my "small" clothes come out of storage. I'm actually looking most forward to this of anything! Then I will have to lose 7 more pounds to be the size I was in college, and at my ideal weight (117-131, and actually, I've been 112. It's too small. 128 is about right). I haven't decided what that reward will be. Whew! I just rechecked if I was small or medium frame. I'm medium. I was just sweating that I might want to head to the lower end or if I was just being anxious about doing what needed to be done. I'm good.

LF and Ed went to the boy/cub scout rocket launch this weekend. Nobody wanted to camp in 40 degree weather. Smart thinking! Other than that, they're just being a couple of guys. We had burgers and dogs for dinner last night. It was a nice change from the prepackaged crap I've been eating. Maybe a chocolate cake is in my future, not a whole one, I guess.

Steve and I had a wonderful weekend in Paris! He wanted to stay near the airport, but I begged him to book our hotel in the 5th, which he did, and it was wonderful. We bought metro passes, but walked everywhere we wanted to go, which included up and down banks of the Seine, to the Cluny (which was less than a block away), the Musee D'Orsay, and to various restaurants.

Dinner last night was at a restaurant that bills itself as the oldest cafe in Paris (founded in 1686, and previously frequented by the likes of Voltaire, Danton, Robespierre, Moliere, Diderot & Ben Franklin). We could see out our window that the building across the street was the one Marat was imprisoned and died in. Our dinner was pretty awesome. We both started out with a bottle of wine and escargots, and I thought of Sheila and how much better off I'd be stomping the buggers with my shoe than maneuvering that teeny fork and the grabber thingie. (They were yum!) Next, Steve had some chicken thing and I had braised ox-cheeks served in a cast iron pot with carrots, potatoes, and a sublime sauce. We finished off with creme brulee --- a favorite of both of ours. I did manage to sneak a couple photos (with the camera flash turned off) when no one was looking and I'll post them when we get back next week.

This morning we flew to Nice (via Munich). I was disappointed not to be able to take the TGV, but flying was cheaper. We have a lovely view of the Mediterranean from our balcony. Steve was to have a conference call at midnight (our time) with coworkers in the US and a business partner in China (there's no good time to have that call) but it got postponed and instead, they scheduled a different call for 8:00 our time, which we only found out about at 7:00... so we got some Chinese take out to eat in our hotel room since dinners take hours here. The call got canceled at the very last moment, and he is on the hook for a proper dinner tomorrow night! (I have to be cool about his schedule since this is a business trip for him.)

I am enjoying speaking French again. I'm a little rusty, but I've been able to communicate all our needs thus far without reverting to English, and have enjoyed the conversations I've had with all sorts of people. Everyone has been as polite, charming and engaging as I remember from my last time here nearly 20 years ago... (that thing about French waiters being rude is a lie --- they're efficient and unbelievably accommodating.)

Steve started out the week with meetings in England, Wales, and Germany. We have lost track of the number of people who have congratulated us on our election and have broached the subject of American politics with us. We have strong opinions on the subject and have enjoyed these conversations (though we'd never be the ones to bring the topic up ourselves).

Tonight's a wash, but I'm looking forward to exploring tomorrow. If Steve doesn't have any work responsibilities, I think we'll rent bicycles and ride them along the beach. If he has to work, I'll shop. I have a whole day of cooking class and various market tours scheduled for Wednesday.

We've noticed lots of poppy pins on lapels. It will be interesting to spend 11/11 in Europe...

You're killing me! Stop by on your way back and drop off some morsel. Please? So what will you do to remember on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." Will you raise your spatula? Stop and breathe the sea air? I guess your food adventures wouldn't be half so bad, except that my group is trickling back from NOLA and tales of awesome dinners, tidbits, and things which I did not get to partake!
