Hi all, haven't been around in a bit--busy outside.
I just received my first vanda--Noriko Sumida Mericlone. She looks very healthy, but! Vanda is in a 4" plastic pot with no potting medium. And the roots are mostly stuck to the pot. What to do?
Put it in the most bright/humid area you have and mist a lot if needed!!! Hopefully you have a greenhouse!
If it will be indoors, it can be tough. Brightest light you can provide and they generally like to get their roots very, very wet each day. As in every day mist them good and then 10-15 mintues later do it again. Maybe even soak them in a bucket of water a couple times a week if it is possible. In winter, I mist my bare root mini ones several times a day.
You can also throw in some large chunks of charcoal or some other inorganic stuff that won't break down too quickly to help hold humidity around the roots.
If you track back a bit in the RHS Database you find the Vanda sanderiana as an ancestor which ideally needs 20 to 30C temps + very high humidity + good light every day. A bit of a challenge in 3/4WI (where real orchid growers live).
Hopefully, some of the other Vandas used in producing your hybrid have a bit more tolerance to lower temperatures and less humidity.
The sparse potting medium is the normal condition and do not repot or fiddle with the plant. Just place it in a good growing spot and observe what happens during the coming winter.
Cannot tell you how to grow the plant but mine (various Vandaceous hybrids) are in a glasshouse, have some cool tolerant ancestors and are growing above bench height.
Maybe someone can give you a complete picture of your plants ancestry to see if it has some ancestors that are not as demanding as sanderiana.
