Arachnis Flos Aeris 'Gracilis"

On Sunday I bought some orchids at the orchid show held at the Miami International Orchid Show here on UM's campus. One of them is Arachnis Flos Aeris and the vendor told me that I should just stick the cutting he sold me (for $10) in the DIRT beside a tree and in no time it should be up and away (up the tree trunk)

I am skeptical bz I don't like the idea of using dirt and I have no tree as I live in a townhouse. I have pots and I am thinking of inserting it into a basket with orchid media (charcoal and lava rock) that is used for vandas.

It has numerous area roots along the stalk and is very healthy looking. He said he has masses of them growing up trees on his farm, so he just took cuttings for sale.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
