phal bottom leaves

Hi everyone, this is my phal I repotted about a month ago. Bt now the base of it is yellow, its actually the two bottom leaves. I have not lost any leaves from the phal for a while now but I notice it started yellowing from the base. If you notice its the leaves base that is yellow above its green and its even put out roots and leaf since I repotted. Is it normal for a phal to start yellowing a leaf from the base. I shifted the media and did not see any soft or mushy area. I will post another pic of the close up of the yellow area. The plant seems healthy otherwise. VELLETA

This is a close up of the root area, as you can see its only the two leaves base that are yellow. So can someone please tell me if its just old age leaves that it will loose or do I have a PROBLEM :( . Thanks for any sugession offered. VELLETA.

Looks normal and healthy to me. Phals lose their old leaves and grow new leaves.

Thanks jane, its jst most of my phals leaves go yellow first, its the first I have seen one where the base yellows first. And I know I did not overwater or anything, so I was sort of wondering if it pick up a fungal infection. Wow this took a big load from my head. Thanks agin. VELLETA. :)

Jane, my plal has gotton worst :( it lost the two previous leaves and now another leaf is turning yellow. It has good roots, I checked and the top leaves are ok, at the base continues to yellow, their was this black ring around it so I watered with Phyton and I removed the ring and dusted with cinnamon, but I still can't figure why its turning yellow. Could you please help it a really big phal which I have had for a few yrs and I don't want to loose it I will post another pic so you can see the entire plant, and if anyone else has any ideas as to how to treat this please help, thank you. VELLETA.

Jane, this is what the plant looks like overall, healthy right, but this is now the third leaf in less than three weks so I know something is wrong. If you look closly between the two leaves you will see the bright yellow base where its loosing the leaves. This is just so very strange. I have other phals loosing bottom leaves but I can tell those are normal but this is not. VELLETA

It might be too wet. That is a tough call from a picture though. It appears to have a lot of sphagnum moss. Guessing from here...

Yes it contains spagnum, charcoal, perlite and coconut husk. All my phals are planted this way. I tried a bark mix on a few and they started to grow a green mold on the potting mix which I hated so I went bk to the spagnum mix. This is the only one that is having this problem and I make sure the go almost dry before watering its packed very loosly so I insert my finger almost to the bottom to ensure its dry before watering. I am still at a lost as to why this is happening and if it was overwatered the leaves would start to go limp and as you can see they are firm and shiny. I have done everything I can think of, so I will just have to pray, watch, wait and see. I really would hate to loose it though. :( velleta.

Brooke thanks if you read the first post you would have seen I said that so I knew something was wrong, I used phyton to water the roots and I used cinnimon on the stem but I will try the peroxide in the crown. VELLETA.

THANKS to everyone for your help I have gotton rid of the infection on my phal. It lost the other leaf with the yellowing and I continued using the hydrogen peroxide and then the yellowing stopped I also repotted using a bark mix with about 10% spagnum moss just to retain a little moisture. I have come to realize that spagnum in my climate is a no, no. It retains way too much water. I am also thinking of repotting all my phals to a bark mix. Which will help them to dry more quickly. So can you guys tell me what mix works best for you with phals? Again thanks for all your help. VELLETA

When I was in Houston, packed sphag was a death sentence in my house. They were fine in bark. Or my favorite....styrofoam packing peanuts and a handful of sphag thrown on top. In a clay pot for stability. It gave plenty of air circulation. The pot and sphag provided humidity, and I could water to my heart's content. :). Packed sphag easily stayed wet for 3 weeks and didn't allow for enough circulation. I also moved a number to S/H, but ended up moving and wasn't able to bring the orchids. They did great for the months I had them in S/H though.

Thanks Nital, don't get packing peanuts here, but lots of polyensaturene ( used to pack bulbs and glass) spag is Really a death sentabce. I have already move some to bark and its only because I am waiting on some clear pots I ordered online frm Repot me. Com ( can't get them here) that I did not repot all I am gonna use bark, charcoal, a bit of perlite and a very small amount os spag and see I suffered so much root rot that I am not even looking for a bloom spike this year I am more interested in getting bk a healthy root system. Thanks again for shearing what works for you. VELLETA.
