What plants

What plants would like to live in or around a shady hot Texas pond with {{gwi:207115}}My Lilies? Kathy

Cattails and bullrush would do well.

I assume the pond has no liner. Cattails will take over. That 4 legged critter will also make short work of many plants.

No liner in the pond. The Panda critter will be ousted. I've seen frogs and turtles. It gets a little afternoon sun. A thicket of Crepe Myrtles are blooming on the left. Horsetail is there. The Colorado Lily is beautiful and has had 15 blooms at once. I can't find a pot so it must be rooted to the bottom. I don't want cattails to take over or hid the pond. I've waded in over 4 feet and scared to go deeper.

Are you looking to plant around the pond AND in the pond or just in the pond? What USDA zone are you in? The problem with most water plants is they are rampant growers by nature.

Orontium aquaticum (Golden Club) has big leaves and is not rampant. Native and good in Zones 5 - 11. About a foot tall with two foot spread. Leaves can be about 12" long. Will thrive in partial shade and full sun. See the link photo to see if you like the look. I think it is a handsome plant.

Here is a link that might be useful: Golden Club

Thankyou Comettose! Golden Club looks fantastic. I'm on a search. I want both the pond and the perimeter planted. Hubby fianlly saw the pond potential and offered a feeding pier for my soon to be transplanted Baby Goldfish. I'll take a picture. I'm open for any suggestions and KNOW NOTHING. I got a couple new Night Bloomers (Red Flare and Trudy Slocum) They are just now closing up at 11:30. I'm so excited and tickeled that My husband is getting "The Bug" too. He wants a stream with a bridge next. I just want more plants. It's such a peacefull spot. Any other great ideas? Kathy

Pond's shaping up. Here's the latest addition from my husband. He's caught "The Bug". That's about as exciting as the discovery of Baby Goldfish. This Texas rain has the pond muddy but that will clear. Now how will the Goldfish know where to be fed? They are used to hearing my boots on the stone walk where we meet for feeding. Guess they'll have to learn the sound of boots on a pier. What a pretty site for it. I love the ferns and the bridge!

Dang girl, you need a little boat to get around in that pond! ;-) Some pink and white caladiums will help bring focus and color to that super shady area. My cannas and butterfly ginger like low sun/shade and are just about maintenance free. I see you have a start of taro there, I love the way it and elephant ears look around the pond. Will the 4 leggers be kept away or is this their water spot too? Where are ya gonna put the bench or seating (dead tree trunks make great 'chairs')? What a beautiful lil pond!

Thank You Pam! Great Idea about using the stumps. There is a Park bench with Iris back but missed these photos. The whole top of the "woods" are pinks and white Crepe {{gwi:207116}}Myrtles blooming but too high up. Can the ones closest to the pond be cut back lower in the fall maybe? I'll look for Caladiums next. The Panda Cattle are fenced out of this area so no worries there. A boat would sure help in trimming back the roughed up Lily Pads on that Colorado. Thanks for helping with ideas everyone! Donnie and Kathy
