Indoor seed starting problem

I'm trying to start some seeds indoors using a 1:1 mixture of vermicullite and peat moss. I planted some zinnas and strawflowers. Now the sprouts are up and looked good for a little while, but a few of them are now all wilted and mushy. The soil mix is damp and doesn't seem to dry out much. Is the problem in my mixture, or my container? (I'm using an old egg carton with drainage holes poked in it.) Do I need to put a fan nearby to keep the air moving? I also have some poinsettas that are showing some mold on the top of their soil, but no adverse effects there....Again, will air circulation help?
