QVC Roses

Anybody check out QVC lately? They have some interesting roses and collections of roses. I was going to order their 3pc "Singing the Blues" collection because it includes the "MARIE OSMOND" rose. I ordered it a couple yrs ago by itsself, and it bloomed nicely, then died. It's a pretty lavender rose. This yr tho, they only offer it with HEIRLOOM and BLUE MOON, both of which I already have. So, I didn't want to spend the $34+ just to get one rose, especially if it ends up dying again. Those are bareroot, and March 31 shipping might just be too late in the season for me anyway.

But, I did order another of their collections that was apparently just recently added. It's called the "3-pc Hardy Garden Rose Collection." Funny thing is, the three roses are Meilland florist floribundas. MIMI EDEN, CHERRY FOLIES and LAVENDER FOLIES. They spell the last two "FOLLIES" but the correct spelling is with one "L". These are own-root, potted roses. Looks like they might be quart-size. They ship out March 31st also. I can't wait to see these!

There's also an interesting collection of "Pastel" roses, but the names are unknown or re-named ones. I really like the salmony colored one and the pale lavender one. The pink one looks sort of like FIRST PRIZE and the yellow looks really familiar. I wonder what they really are.

They have some interesting tree roses with double grafts (two different colored roses). And for anyone looking for the green rose MINT JULEP, they carry it as a set of 2 under the name "Emerald Rose."

The Intrigue/Sunsprite Tree Rose, Ink Spots/St. Patrick's Tree Rose and Angel Face/Cherish Tree Rose look awesome. Wonder what they really grow like... I wish there pictures weren't doctored... Some of those colors are totally off...

The Summer Fireworks Mini Rose Collection, 8 miniature roses isn't a bad deal... $4 per rose...

Do you have a real picture of Marie Osmond when you grew her?

Yeah, I managed to get one picture. It was a pretty rose. Not sure if it's something that Cottage Farms hybridized for Marie, or if they re-named an existing rose. It doesn't really look like anything else I've seen. But then, this was the only batch of blooms it got before it died. So I don't know if this is truly characteristic of this rose or not.

I'm still tempted to go ahead and order the set. I'd end up having to give BLUE MOON to my mom. I do have HEIRLOOM, but it's planted waaaay in the backyard and gets very little sun. It was not a very good plant to begin with.

Beth, have you ordered from them before?
I placed an order for a Frau Karl Druschki, then I decided to check Garden Watchdog. The reviews are not so good - lots of negatives.
I would love to get hold of Mimi Eden, too, but paying $50 looks like a bit too much, especially taking into consideration all these negative comments.

Yes, Marina, I said above I had ordered MARIE OSMOND (in 2005), but I also ordered the set of two EMERALD ROSEs. All of them died. My problem is the roses only ship when they decide to ship them, which is March 31. For me, bareroots shipped later than the middle of March often do not end up breaking dormancy because it's too warm here. They end up drying out and dying. That's why I'm leary of buying the "Singing the Blues" set, because it's just too late for bareroots for me. They wouldn't arrive until the first week of April. As I recall, they didn't wrap the bareroots all that well. I mean they arrived in "ok" condition, and the MARIE rose did grow, but the other two never broke dormancy. For other parts of the country, they might do just fine. The roses I just ordered are potted own-roots, so they will be ok.

I can't find a Garden Watchdog listing for QVC.

Maybe it's under Cottage Farms. That's the company that they get the roses from.

Thank you Beth and good luck with your new purchases.
Jaxondel, yes, Beth is right - I looked Cottage Farms at the Watchdog. Very unsettling reviews :(

I used to get flowers and plants from them and they give 100% guarantee. Keep your receipts and they'll replace or refund your money. Or they used to the years I ordered from them. I noticed they're selling groups of Sequoia minis.

Thanks Beth & Dark Lady. Gee, after checking out the Garden Watchdog comments, I'll avoid QVC & Cottage Farms like the plague. If read closely, even most of the positive comments have a trumped-up, insider 'ring' to them.

Beth, you have more roses than God, and you have a knack for making any rose grow and do well. I think you could buy a diseased rose and it would thrive. Roses love you as much as you love them, JMHO.

    Beth,
Are you sure that you didn't get Blueberry Hill before?
Helpmefind has no listing for Marie Osmund and the photo on the website below shows a real change in color towards the center.
(And I loved Blueberry Hill, but my (blush) five plants had RMV and didn't want to come through winter.)

Hah! Patricia you have NO idea!! I've probably killed almost as many roses as I now have! LOL But thanks for the compliment anyway!!

Ann, I don't know what that rose could've been. It might've even been the MARIE OSMOND rose! I dunno? It only did that little batch of blooms and then suddenly died. If that article is accurate, then the rose was created for Marie. And if it looks even close to that picture, I might just have to try it again. Maybe if I soak the entire bareroots in a garbage can for a week or so before planting, then maybe they might make it. Hmmmm... I'll think about it.

    Beth,
It wasn't the time of year that the plants arrived. Twelve years ago I bought 110 bare root roses at the summer Park Wayside sale for $1 each, the last Saturday in June. The roses were in cold storage until then.
I soaked them, inventoried them and got them planted over a period of ten days (I didn't even have room for that many, and there were all kinds of roses in my gaggle of roses.) I kept them watered. (I didn't know to mound up mulch over them until they broke leaves.) I didn't loose a single rose bush.
It was a hot and miserable summer with not a lot of rainfall. But watering every second or third day made bushes.
Bushes shouldn't be dieing for you in April, and they should ALL live.
Do watch for fungal problems on the canes. A creeping black crud that's not cut back can kill a potential rose really fast.
That redder center is so different from ...is it Paradise, the mauve HT rose that blushes/sunburns reddish on the edges of its petals? I just don't know of a rose or group of roses that open reddish and pale to mauve.

Ann, unfotunately, for me it CAN BE the time I receive the roses. But, it can also be that the roses might be in cold storage too long. They get dried out. The ones I got from QVC, I remember them being dry looking, not supple, altho green. I don't know what happened. I'm really disappointed that the MARIE rose or whatever it is didn't make it. It might just be fun to order it again just to see what happens this time. Soak and really mulch! Maybe put 'em under a mister. But I am excited about those Meilland roses! Can't wait to see how they are upon arrival.

    Beth,
I looked at the Meilland roses too when I first saw your post, but one is a mini, which I avoid, one is a patented floribunda (as much as I like to propagate, that leaves that out), and the other did not have the class listed on HMFR. I do agree they look intriguing!

Actually Mike, MIMI EDEN is listed as both a floribunda and a mini-flora, so it must be a smallish flower that grows tall or something like that. The "Folies" series are all floribundas. I have the striped ARROW FOLIES which is one of the roses I got in the last batch of Carlton Roses a few yrs ago. I didn't see LAVENDER FOLIES on the Mailland website, but I have seen it on a couple of the florist websites.

EVERY rose i have purchased from qvC (cottage farms) has kicked the bucket! I did purchase the singing the blues collection for the Marie Osmond rose last year....they sent me 2 unmarked and one that said blue moon but bloomed pink....very scrawny looking. i have spent 100's of dollars on cottage farms (no exaggeration) and my flowers do very well but the roses are horrible! I will be calling soon to get my replacement of the roses that never even got a leaf last year but I really wouldn't recommend them for roses. The up side is they have a great customer service....no problem getting replacements but at times it is very hard to get anyone on the phone....seems alot of people need replacements. I know last year cottage farms direct sold just the Marie Osmond on their site....you may want to check.

I still have the mini's I bought 5 yrs. ago. The Paradise and double delight rose trees were spectacular and bloomed constantly last yr. They appear to have survived the winter. My ultimate favorite rose tree is up on their site. The royal amethyst. A constant bloomer from spring till hard frost with an incredible scent and huge blooms. Mine died but it was because the roots from a near by tree suffocated it. I was totally sick about it. I checked daily and finally saw it on their site this past friday and ordered 2. I have had plants from them die but that's happened from other places I've bought from. I learned a lesson awhile back. I ordered 2 hibiscus trees from a site that I can't even remember now. I paid about 2 bucks apiece. They came in the freezing cold in green plastic bags. I was horrified but planted them in containers in the house. They looked like dead twigs. About a month later I was reading a review of this site. Incredibly bad reviews. I looked over at these 2 ugly twigs and thought "I've had enough of looking at these things". I yanked one out and thought I saw something. Tiny white things at the bottom. I was freaking out!! ROOTS!! Then I got scared and hurried up and put it back in the container. Planted them outside when it was warm enough. This will be their 4th or 5th year and their so beautiful. Boy am I glad I didn't throw them away. Donna

Oh, I totally agree Donna. I've lost roses from the best of the best suppliers. And to no fault of my own. You might have to baby these a little more than some, but not necessarily.

Heck, I recently ordered three roses from a supplier in San Diego. One I've never ordered from before, and probably never would've except for the fact that they had a new rose that's not available anywhere else. A new Carruth rose apparently named after someone local down there, but it looked like a real beautiful apricot that I just HAD to have. To make the shipping worthwhile, I ordered a total of three roses. They arrived loose in the box, with dry newspaper wrapped around them. Totally bone dry, with decent roots, but the canes were chopped back to barely 6". Two of the plants were already sprouting growth, but the canes were dry. They inadvertantly sent me two of one of the other roses, and none of the exclusive one. I emailed them and they were very nice and apologetic. I received the correct rose last week, totally bone dry again, with canes dried out and no swollen budeyes. I soaked it, potted it up and mulched it, and now with the rain we've had the last several days, it's all nice and supple and looking good. All 4 of the roses will make it. I won't order from them again because of their packaging. They just obviously don't know how to pack plants properly for shipping, but their customer service is commendable.

You just never know. You take your chances. Not all suppliers are going to send out monster plants with massive roots and huge canes. They don't all pack the same either. And a plant that arrives in excellent condition can still end up dying for some reason or other. And those itty bitty dried out ones that you get sometimes might just surprise you. It's all a crap shoot!

That picture looks like Angel Face to me - at least the ones that I had looked like that. Interestingly they all bloomed once beautifully then kicked the bucket and they were not purchased in the same years!

Hey, Ann, I never did make it back to your place to see your roses in bloom!
