If this one is white-fruited it could be contrasted with the winterberry. Here the native white ones do grow in some tough spots under trees. However, many kinds of maple form a mat of roots + dense canopy that often excludes much growth beneath them - at least until they are quite large and comparatively old, with elevated crowns. Even then, perhaps certain kinds of plants only will be seen beneath them. Here, for instance, the native bigleaf maple may have a nearly pure colony of sword ferns beneath it but not much else.

If your tree is a red-leaved Norway maple bareness beneath is typical.

I am interested to hear if you planted that combination and how that worked out for you. I am thinking about snowberry and winterberry combos too

I'm not sure the OP is around any more but I can offer some advice on a Snowberry. That is I would not plant it in full dry shade. I have mine in part sun and it does fine but I think full shade would stress the plants too much and make them more susceptible to pests. I could imagine that the white berries would combine well with winterberry though. Even so, winterberry wouldn't like full shade and especially dry shade. Both would do well in a part shade environment together.
