Shrubs being browsed!

Well, we've had rabbits in the past but this time it's not the rabbits. Our new puppy is browsing our shrubs right to the ground! He's taken 1' shrubs to the ground and our 3' shrubs are now only 1'tall after only 3 weeks. We've tried EVERYTHING with him including escorting him in our fenced backyard and scolding him when he touches the shrubs but he is just adament to eat them! Is there something we can do to disuade him? Do dogs sense hot pepper sauce? I could spray the shrubs with that, if it will work (though I'd have to buy a LOT of sauce since our backyard is small but wooded. We've spent a lot of money planting all these shrubs and now they are getting ravaged. We also can't escort the pup outside all the time either. Any ideas as to what to do?

Thanks,

Barb

Try a product called Liquid Fence. It has been great at keeping the deer from munching my shrubs any further. It is a variety of bad-tasting things--you can check--and it is sold at farm and garden supply stores.

Just checked online. Liquid Fence makes a product just for repelling dogs and cats--don't know how it works. You can get it online. www.liquidfence.com Hopefully it works as well as the stuff for deer does.

Thank you SOOOO much. It just breaks my heart when I can't go out with the puppy but I can see him eating all my trees, shrubs and plants that we worked so hard to plant last year and the previous year.

Forget the liquid and go with the fencing.

along with fencing puppy up in a yard or kennel, get him some things to chew on. He is probably cutting new teeth. Some of the heavy rubber toys have a hole to load with peanut butter. Keeps dog busy for long times licking out the flavor.

Puppies need to chew, develops their jaw muscling. They will find SOMETHING to gnaw on, give them something allowed, not shoes, chairs, shrubs.

Most dogs will outgrow the chewing habit, but not quickly. Bigger breeds take longer, up to a couple years. Just a need they have. Our small Corgi dog still just loves chewing twigs that fall off trees and she is 6. Pencils work too!
If you contol the situation, allow the dogs to chew certain objects in HIS yard, make objects more enticing with flavor, then he won't go for the bushes.

Thank you to everyone for all the advice. We are currently trying hot pepper sauce b/c none of our stores carry the liquid fence. I'm sure once the garden centers open in spring they will have something like it if not the real thing. The hot pepper sauce is working fine though. At first he licked it and seemed to like it but now he hasn't touched a single shrub with the hot sauce on it and started searching for ones that I haven't yet applied the sauce to. HOpefully the sauce won't harm the shrubs. I don't think it will and I read that rabbits won't like it much either and we've had problems with rabbits the two years we've been here. I've also discovered that the pup abhors raw garlic so if the hot pepper sauce stops working I guess I can put a handful of garlic bulbs in the blender and paint it on the shrubs. My neighbors must think I'm nuts! Basting my trees with red hot sauce on a BBQ baster but I've spent way too much time and way too much money on our woods to have the puppy single handedly (paw-ed-ly I guess) destroy the work.

If anyone reading has any other physical barrier methods, I'd love to hear about them so I have more back-ups.
