I use Jobe's tomato spikes. Just push them into the pot till they are covered.

No problems with fish using Jobe's. I use 1 per pot about once a month in the summer.

What do you plan to do with the barrels in the winter? Most plants will die if the roots or tubers freeze.

I was going to put all of the pots at the bottoms of the barrels and use small stock tank heaters in each barrel. Although maybe the papyrus should be brought inside? Do you think this will work?
