Confession...

Yup, I have to own up. Yesterday I went and bought 6 goldfish :-D

I know I said I had enough pets already with 4 buns and 2 dogs... but... I kept looking into my new pond and thinking what a waste of such a nice spot when there are so many homeless fish living in boring tanks in water-garden shops.

DH discovered the first midge larveas in the water earlier that day, and he HATES midges (Small mosquitoes) so he agreed it would be a great idea to get them... he he.

Here they are in the bucket while I added the pond water little by little.

They still wont come to the surface when were next to it yet, so theyre hard to see.

{{gwi:222806}}Im quite fond of them already :-)

Theyd only been in the pond for a few hours when one of them tried to jump up the stream! DH saw it too, so I know I didnt imagine it. Was that playing? At the shop they had different fish mixed mixed in almost all the tanks as they kept jumping from one to another!

My pond is 132 gallons + the upper pond is about 25 gallons. They cant go up there, but I guess the filtering of that extra water will also do them good, right?

I only wanted 3 cuz I thought that was what I had space for. Theyre 3 inches long. But the shop guy said 6 would be fine. And as they were on special offer for 6, the price was the same for 3 and 6. So Im hoping they have enough space?

Hoping everyone has a nice day.

Take care,

Hanne in Denmark

I think they are darling! We haven't done much about fish in our pool-to-pond conversion yet, except the requisite mosquito fish, but of course at first, months ago, I let the kiddies get some feeder goldfish. And now they are a few inches long! Fun.

I just love my goldfish. They are feeder fish too and they have grown so much in the past 3 months. When I shut off the skimmer filter they know its feeding time and they dart around and swim in circles. They get so excited! Also, there is not any bugs or lavae ANYWHERE in the pond because of them. Your husband will be happy as soon as your fish start eating those midges.

Hmm...first the pond, then the addition & widening the falls and now this! Yup, you've caught the FEVER! *grin* (and yes, it's contagious).

The sextuplets are adorable. How thoughtful of you to rescue them & plop them down in the lap of luxury! They'll soon be following you all around the pond pretending they're starving - don't buy it - they're excellent fakers, lol.

    Congrats & enjoy!

    Hi all.

Thanks for your nice comments :-)

I must admit Im already really fond of these guys. Theyre so much fun to sit and watch.

Mondotomhead, youre so right... They already cleaned every bug and other bits out of the pond after a few days.

Yesterday I discovered lots and lots of midge larvea in a bucket with gravel and water. I caught lots in a cup and fed them to the goldies and boy did they learn that trick fast :-D

They still pull a bit back when we get near the pond... but theyre coming to the surface now to get food. So I can easily picture them beging for food soon. Thanks for warning me that theyre fakers :-D, Diggery.

I agree, this is definately contagious. Im already eyeing another bit of the garden that might turn into a bigger pond one day.

Im sure these guys will outgrow this 'tiny' pond soon.. grin.

    Take care,
    Hanne

Last summer our grown kids decided we needed fish in our pond before we had finished removing a lot of silt form a recent flood, but the fish don't seem to mind all of the cleaning and such, in fact, we just spotted about a dozen new babies.

    So....just wait until next spring!

Just wait til they get used to seeing you. if I walk by the comets, now 4-5" long start appearing magically....but not for anyone else.
Our little town has a church which has an electronic carrillon which plays at 6pm every evening. I started having a beer, feeding the fish, and listening to the bells. Now when the bells start playing there is a 'mad rush' for the open area where I feed them whether I'm there or not. They must sense the vibration of the bells through the water surface?

One thing I think is funny is how fish are so excited by anything new in the pond or any action. It doesn't take much. At first they naturally are afraid, but that is soon replaced by a powerful curiosity. So funny!

My hubby taught his goldfish to come to him for belly rubs by holding the food in his hand and wiggling his fingers. They come to it to get it. They actually get into his palm and wiggle, lol. They are so cute. Even the mosquito fish come to him, lol.
