Burpee germination

My brother got me a certificate for xams from Burpee. This year will plant 100 or so zinnias.

Wanted ones were purple prince and tequila lime. The purple prince germination rate is, at best 25 % and the lime is about the same.

I also noticed all the zinnia seed from Burpee has lower germination rate the Ferry Morse packet I picked up at Home Depot, they had 95% germ rate.

All are in the same prop box, heat at 70-72 with lights. For years I have had not problem getting zinnias to germ at 80 to 90% rate and up in 3 days.

Anyone else see a difference between Burpee and other seed suppliers?

Burpee is sending me a few replacement packets.

I don't have any experience with Burpee's zinnia seeds, but this year I picked up a packet of their bottle gourds. Needless to say, i am VERY disappointed. Out of the fifteen or so seeds I put out, one of them, ONE germinated. This is compared to the Ferry Morse bottles i had last year, where all but a two or so grew quite nicely.

Same thing with the Japanese eggplant seeds I tried out last year.

agh, I don't know what it is but I'm sticking to Ferry Morse or a local distributor from here on out!

I'm happy with Burpee zinnia seeds from this year. They had high germination rates, along with other Burpee seed varieties which were sown. I especially like the Burpee signature series and have great success with Lady Lavendar, sunflower, pink primrose, and some others. I'm also happy this year and past with seeds from the following companies: Ferry Morse, Lake Valley, Thompson Morgan, Valueseeds (T&M markdowns), Unwins, Baker Creek (they give a large quantity), Ball (I love them, but they do not give sowing instructions on packets), Jung, Park, Henry Field, Schumway, Seedman.Com, Renee's, Johnny's Select, Territorial, Harris, Totally Tomatoes, and that's all I can think of right now.
I grew a Burpee zinnia last year that was out of this world, with an outer color ring of magenta, and an inner color ring of deep butter yellow. It was so beautiful, but did I save seeds? No, so I'm hoping for some reseeds, as I don't see that zinnia in the catalogs any longer.

I would think twice with these seeds, as my experience has not been the greatest: Walmart, American Seed.

I have purchased Burpee seeds and found them to be significantly lacking (quantity wise) add to that a low germ. rate...and that makes for some pretty expensive plants. I made the mistake of not looking closely at the weight of the packet...they were full priced, so I also figured they'd be equal to others.

I personally have had better results with the seeds from the dollar store!!! no kidding. and for a quarter!!!

It is very disappointing to buy them and then see nothing come up.

man, what a time to stumble on this thread. I've gotten the majority of my seeds from burpee this year and I've been wondering WTF there hasn't been any germination from them. The two random packs of seeds I picked up from walmart that were Walmart branded are already up and jumping (mesclun & radishes) and everything else is just sitting there dead.

The worst part is that it takes FOREVER+++ to make those paper pots so I'll be most pissed that I wasted all the work on the pots than I would be on the wasted $$ from the bum seeds.

    Crappola.

I purchased the majority of my veggies from Burpee. My germination was quite successful with the exception of my eggplants and peppers. I do know that these take a long time so I am still hoping!!

This is my first year starting from seed and have tried several different methods.

I found the best to be the coffee filter/baggie method. I liked that I could check every couple of days to see what was going on. I am a control freak and this suited my anal-ness the best.

    Good luck!!!
