Coon -1 Scarecrow - 0

I was watching TV when the motion lights in my back yard came on. I jumped up off the couch and looked out the window. The scarecrow was going crazy and there in the middle of my little red bridge was the biggest raccoon I ever seen. It was sitting on its hind legs with its front paws on the bridge railing taking a shower in the spray of the scarecrow. It proceeded to go up the waterfall and dislodge some rocks, great stuff and all with the spray of the scarecrow hitting it. I opened my sunroom door and clapped my hands and yelled and it ran behind my garage only to return 15 minutes later. No wonder my poor fish lost it's tail. I seen some big road kill but this one makes big foot look small. It is dark brown. The second trip it brought a lighter gray one with it. Maybe a baby?

sounds like it is time for a critter cage to catch them and relocate a long way from your pond

Time for a live trap maybe? NO coon would get out of my yard alive. I have trapped them in live traps, works great. Catch and release??? NOT ME!! I send them to the great beyond. Then I know they will not come back. Have not lost a fish to a coon in 5 years and I do not plan to start now.

Laws very from state to state but here in OHIO the law is if you trap a nusance animal, your supposed to kill it. You need a large live trap you get them at a farm supply store. Bate it with a sm tuna sized can of dry cat food. Push it way in the back past the trip lever. You will have yourself one big fat coon next morning. I use my 22 to dispatch the critter. bury it or dispose it in a fitting way. You will never have peace with him and your pond. He's found a great food source and he won't willingly go away. If you like your fish, you will have to follow through. The first time is the hardest. I caught one coon that was so large he could hardly fit in my largest cage but I caught him. I have never lost fish from coon. But if I see any trace of coon, muddy paw prints, rocks ajar, the cage is set up immediately.

So sorry to hear that the scarecrow didn't work!!! My neighbor has a scarecrow to detract deer, and it goes off everytime a fly goes by(it's right by the fence and I get to hear it all day!!!)It's kinda maddening as we are on sever water restrictions and this thing is wasting soooo much water....but what can you do? The deer are bad here....that's why I put a big deer fence up!!! Hopefully it'll keep the racoons away too.?!?! Plus I have my Ratwielers....(too small to be rotwiellers!)

My husband converted a Fishock electric fence from Petco from wire and plastic posts to copper tubing and bamboo posts. Looks a lot nicer and works 100% (when turned on) against raccoons.

Killing them only reduces the population temporarily. The ones that are left will actually have more babies if there is open territory......
