No, there is not. The Suntory Company in Japan says that they have produced a "blue" rose, but those I know who have seen it in person tell me that it is lavender. And it is not available for sale in the US, only in Japan.

This company in Japan has been pushing the story of having a blue rose for years now. If they truly had a blue rose, it would be on the market all over the world by now. The fact is it is lavender, not blue. Roses do not have the gene for the color blue, and all attempts to gene splice the blue gene from another plant have failed.

They finally spliced the gene in correctly, so technically they have a rose with a blue gene. However, the pH turned out to be a factor they didn't foresee--the pH of the rose tissue is different than the pH of the plant that contributed the blue gene, so they ended up with lavender--again!

There are blue roses available--but just the plastic or fabric kind. :(

This was seen on a Florist advertisment(sp?)during valentine.I guess he want get a blue rose,unless I go to Walmarts and get him a plastic one.LOL

No -- There are no blue roses (not even that Suntory thang, which appears to be Angel Face color) . . .

AND there are no black roses
(Tho I bought a nifty black silk one at !BigLots!)

A touch of blue in the garden is a welcome-some thing, but it still has to come from "companion plants."

How ironic! My mom just gave me a book she finished reading called "The Blue Rose: An English Garden Mystery, by Anthony Eglin.

She said she thought I would really like it. It's about a couple who buy a new place and find a blue rose bush blooming in their garden. It may not be real, but apparently there is a demand for it...according to the front cover of the book :)

Blue roses found at florists are white having been sprayed with a blue floral spray. This spray can be purchased at florist supply stores and at some hobby shops.
it's water based and won't harm the rose but as the rose bud opens more any unsprayed petal portions will be white.

Mauve roses do have a gene called rosacyanin which is a truer blue than delphinum blue. It might take years to accumulate enought rosacyanin to get a true blue rose but it is going to happen. And you can be sure the Japanesse are trying to use this gene both ways, accumulation of rosacyanin by normal hybridization and using scientific means.

I have ordered Tarde Gris this year, it should arrive in November as bare roots. I'm glad to read it has good scent! It's by Spanish breeder Dot, whose roses are supposed to be bred with heat and drought tolerance in mind.

Also have to add my two current "blues" Charles de Gaulle and Mamy Blue to the list. Both have strong scent. CdG is more lemony and Mamy Blue is citrusy too but more complex with old rose scent in the mix.

I love how Lavender Crush makes Lagerfeld's color intensify. Beautiful roses, Straw!
