possibly Lasting Love, and most definitely not Black Baccara. Of the above, they still qualify as red, not black, but definitely less of a bright red. Black Jade is the darkest I think. There are more, but not really for my climate.

Black Magic! I do have Black Baccara and it is a darker, but smaller rose, slower to recycle, and doesn't produce the blooms that Black Magic does.

oops, I guess I just assumed dark red because that is what I'm getting...

Ebb Tide- dark purple
Night Owl- an upright single and very striking climber, amazing purple color described as 'grape juice' in the catalogs
The Prince- reddish purplish
Tradescant- a red I forgot, just ordered it and it should be very dark

'Black Magic' is probably your best bet.

Zyperiris, I think Deep Secret should do great in your climate, as mine performs best in the cooler parts of our growing season down here on the gulf coast. Not overlylarge, the plant might grow 3 to 4 feet, is nicely shaped, hybrid tea blooms of only 3 to 3 1/2 inch diameter, but they are rich, dark red, darkest on the outer petals, look great from bud to half-open stage, then get a tad muddled, as they have a lot of petals. Fragrance is equal to the best red roses--Mr. Lincoln, Papa Meilland, etc. Depending on the weather and timing of when you take cut stems, the blooms may appear at first virtually black, then brighten as the inner petals are revealed. To top it off, its a Tantau rose and is quite resistant to blackspot!

Oh right, speaking of Papa Meilland, another deep red rose that is superb for me as a cutting rose, though the plant is lanky and not attractive. As a cut flower, the bloom ages beautifully in my air-conditioned office where I'm always filling bud vases. It starts off deep red, shades to somewhat black-ish red, then ages a deep concord-grape purple! Amazing color change! Do any other Papa M. owners want to chime in as to whether you see this color show as well. For me it's purely as a cut flower that this happens. On the bush the blooms don't last as long and just get dark and shriveled. Terrific form, size, and fragrance!

I've had Black Magic, which is beautiful, much taller, not nearly so disease resistant, and has Zero fragrance.

A great choice if you can ever find it is Taboo, aka Barkarole. May have to go to Canada to buy it, as it seems J&P doesn't want to give anyone permission to sell in the US market. A 1988 rose, when DOES that patent run out, anyway? It just seems wrong for J&P to put it out there, then yank it away just to avoid competing with their newer introductions.

My darkest red of all, a shade darker than Deep Secret, is the mini-flora, Memphis Magic. No fragrance at all. The blooms at times look completely black, but I've had a couple people unfortunately ask me why I had "dead" roses in a vase. Hmm, maybe pure black isn't such a terrific goal after all. lol

When I lived near Seattle, Mr. Lincoln was my favorate red rose. Seems to love that climate. But it is very tall, and not as dark as the other roses above that I've mentioned.

Tradescant & Oklahoma are luscious.

My absolute favorite dark velvety red is Papa Meilland; if you cut the flowers in bud stage, it lasts long and the fragrance is intoxicating and it gets darker while unfolding. It isn't easy to find a good specimen though.

I agree that Taboo is a must, but no source for it in the US. Order it in advance from Palatine for next year (along with Papa Meilland). They will send you huge, healthy plants.

Lavaglut is a great flori, such a special dark red that one cannot compare it to any others. Plenty of blooms that last a long time even in full sun.

I tried Black Magic 3 or 4 times and I always failed with it, besides it had no fragrance. It seems to me that rose is great in CA but not in my area.

Royal William is a productive, big bush, large flowers, good for cutting, quite healthy, fragrant.

Black baccara is the blackest of the black-red roses (along with Taboo), but more easily spoiled in rain, no fragrance.

less dark but still:
Rouge Royale - not so dark that those mentioned above but the flowers last long and the fragrance is fantastic
W. Shakespeare - dark red big flowers, shruby, very fragrant
The prince- dark purple, almost black, needs afternoon shade, sinfully fragrant
Tradescant the darkest Austin but probably the largest and the most blackspot prone
Prospero - not so dark but the healthiest of the Austins IMO, fragrant

OGRS: Indigo, Reine des Violettes

I will suggest newer Tantau rose 'Astrid Grafin von Hardenberg' - richest dark color, heady fragrance, remarkable health, overall a beauty!

Forgot to mention - great repeat, blooms come in clusters of 3 to 9. Because of the color, this rose will benefit from some mid-day shade.

These pics don't even show the "real" color of these roses. They are both very difficult to photograph right. But these are close. INK SPOTS is a good one too. I don't have any good pics of it from last yr tho. I got BLACK MAGIC last yr, but didn't get any decent blooms on it yet.

I have been also looking for Asrtid Grafin but no avail at Hortico any time when I check it.

Black Magic is my best dark red. It doesn't have a scent, but the blooms are beautifully formed and last forever. It gets very tall, 4-5 feet tall here and only 2 feet wide or a bit wider at the top. I do have Barkarole/Taboo but I haven't had much luck with it. Every once in a while it will have a really great dark red bloom with a nice scent, but it doesn't do this very often. It doesn't bloom much and the blooms don't always form very well. I've been giving it time since other people on the forum really like theirs but I wouldn't go through the trouble to get it again. It is the closest to black of any rose I grow. Ingrid Bergman is a good dark red too, not as dark as the others but the blooms have a bit of a scent and last a long time so it is nice to have. Ingrid does not get very large for me, maybe 2X2'.

If you want more of a dark purple, then the Prince is the best of the dark purples. It has a good scent and lasts for a few days in a vase which is more than I can say for most Austins. The Prince is a smaller rose bush. Ebb Tide bloomed well but the individual blooms were small and didn't cut at all well for me. Mine didn't have a scent either although it is supposed to. Intrigue has the same dark purple color most of the time but it does turn red in the heat. Intrigue smells very lemony and doesn't grow very well or bloom very much, but a good bloom is very nice. I do have Blackberry Nip which is a dark purple hybrid tea, but it was a tiny baby last year with one bloom so I can't say much yet. That one bloom was very promising though.

Don't forget the mini, Black Jade, just in case you need a little accent plant.

So it seems Black Magic does well besides CA on the PNW, midwest and even in very cold area but it certainly hated my humid coastal climate and I tried on Dr. Huey, Fortuniana, own root and you name it. By second year it was a two cane (no) wonder with sporadic blooms no matter where I planted it.

TRADESCANT practically screams Gothic Beauty with a sinful fragrance to match.

Some of the ones I would recommend have already been mentioned such as Taboo/Barkarole which got quite tall at my house out there. Black Magic I have seen in Woodland Park looking pretty good. Lavaglut can be almost black, but I had blackspot problems with it, so it needed regular spraying. A couple others not mentioned are Schwarze Madonna and LD Braithwaite. I have seen LDB on the show tables as quite large and quite dark and able to intimidate just about any other red rose off the show table. Other dark reds in the once-bloomer groups are Charles De Mills and Tuscany Superb. For the Chrysler Imperial offspring, the Oklahomas, Mister Lincolns, and Papa Meillands, my experience with them as a group is that they like warmer weather. I had Papa Meilland which had very large flowers, but not many of them. It does better for me here. Chrysler and its kids are fine when the weather warms up out there. They just want to turn purple when it is cool and damp. Other good fairly dark reds are Loving Memory and Ace of Hearts. Two more good dark red floribundas are the velvety Glad Tidings and constantly blooming Lili Marleen. I hope you can find something in this rather extensive, cumulative list to fill your bill.

I'm surprised noone likes Black Baccara. It is one of my favorites. Yes it is a small bush, the blooms aren't huge, and it has no smell... and yes it can get mildew in a snap..

BUT when you get a perfect bloom they are so exquisite and they keep in a vase for over a week. And they can be Black in the right conditions.

I admit it's a fussy rose but honestly one of my favorites for cutting.

Gbebeh, I do like Black Baccara but I agree with you it is a very fussy rose - humidity, rain, too strong light all can ruin the blooms. But if one can get a perfect bloom it is gorgeous. Deborah had 3 BB and she alwyas had plenty of blooms & hers were always in perfect shape, I don't know how she managed that in Virginia Beach.
