Jitty, Rosie and my son's dog Trigger, used to be terrified of thunder till I fed them slivers if cooked sausage every time there was a peal. Now they don't turn a hair, though I still cower when there's a bang overhead!

    Trish,

Maybe another S Romance for you in the future! Thank you! She is a great bloomer!

Sausage sounds like a very welcome trick! Happy Doggie! A few videos on you tube tell about burying fish in soil for fertilizing. Ine should buy ”the cheaoest fish,” but I had a surplus of salmon recently. Ideally , a hole fish w/ bones wouid be the perfect complete fertilizer for plants, having enough nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium & more nutrients. My salmon was boneless, so I give my roses other things for calcium & phosphorous. I also purchased some rock phosphate.

Try watching a video on whole fish fertilizing….

. Processed Fish fertilizer can be really expensive & whole cheap fish may be less expensive & a slow release fertilizer., I read later to bury fish 6 inches to 18 inches in the soil. Maybe the rodents won’t dig them up. One whole fish per medium sized plant for 4-6 weeks. Wow!

And real fish have 60 elements to fertilize plants, way more than ”synthetic fertilizers.” The real stuff is so much better than ”chemical fertilizers…..

    Macro- and Micro-nutrients from Fish:

NOTE: I heard some say 1 fish per plant for the season or for 4-6 weeks. The fellow in 2nd video uses liquid Alaska Fish Fertilizer and whole fish, both, for immediate and slow release fertilizing.

    TODAY

Little rain 4-6:00pm so far-all being watered & cooled. Yay!

Kitty, I'd have no chance of the fish not being dug up with our dogs. Rosie can smell something from 50 yards away. I once buried a dog in our garden, and the next dog I got would dig it up whenever my back was turned. We get a product here called Charlie's Carp, which is cheap and good for the environment as it's made from carp that were introduced and took over the native fishes.

I am enjoying the lovely photos of all the roses. Mine are juuussst starting to bloom, but we have a thunderstorm with possible hail forecast for tomorrow. Here’s hoping it doesn’t do any damage! In the meantime, a photo of the first bloom of Japanese Iris ‘Pinkerton’, which seems to like my heavy clay and rocky soil! 🦋

Just one more of Alchemist because it's so beautiful. It's very hard for me to keep up with this forum anymore because of how my life changed once I became a full time working single parent a couple of years ago. I just got a promotion which is great but life is so insanely busy. Weeds abound in the garden but also blooms. I hope you all are doing well. I think of you all whenever I interact with my roses.

The husband of one of my good friends is a commercial fisherman and diver, with his own boat. When they bought their first home and originally planted their roses, they put a fish carcass at the very bottom of each hole. No problem with critters or their dog because it was so deep. But they don't regularly add more fresh fish :-D

Well, I now have 2 more roses to get rid of. First Crush and my favorite rose La Fontaine aux Perles. I had sprayed LFaP with Downy Mildew spray twice last year and once this summer, and it has it again. I give up on it. DRAT.

Kitty - Thanks, Kitty {{{{hugs}}}}. So the salmon has worked for your roses before. Interesting. I had about 45 minutes outside this morning. I wore a sweater for most of it. lol Everything is very green with all the rain we've been getting. No...tornado warning?!! That's scary. By the time you read this, it will be Friday, so how was Thursday's weather? I'm thinking of April and Ashley roses for next year, as they'll be shipping to Canada, apparently. Their rootstock is Dr. Huey, which isn't recommended for our cold climate, but the roses will be in the garage...so they should be okay...unless they get black cane and die back when we put them outside in the spring when it's 5C/41F and hotter. What do you think of A & A? Good info about fish fertilizers. Nice that you and I both use Alaskan Fish fertilizer.

Jim - hot and stormy. Good time to stay inside. We went for a walk in the rain, and it was thundering here too.

Trish - I hear you about killing your Summer Romance. I've killed so many roses. Heavy sigh. We went to England once to take our daughter there for a grade 12 4 month educational exchange. I had restless leg the whole time and thought I would lose my mind. lol Wow!! That's really interesting...a chewing gum that promotes recovery of the sense of smell. That might be good for my husband. I didn't know that Tea roses don't suffer much from blackspot or pests. What a great way to cure a dog's fear of thunder. I should try that for my pooches. Oh, my goodness...that's horrible...I would freak out if my dog kept digging up my previous dog. Ugh. It's kind of funny, though, in retrospect, I guess. :) Charlie's Carp sounds perfect...from invasive carp. Yes!!

Marcie - that's a stunning iris!!! I adore the colors!! Hail doesn't usually do much to my roses, except shred the leaves. Your roses should, hopefully, be okay. :)

Magpie - sure, being a single working parent must be very difficult. You have to be everything. Never mind the weeds. :) Thanks for taking time for us, but don't waste your precious time reading countless posts. :) Enjoy the pictures, read a few, and share a photo once in a while. We get how busy you are. :) Btw, that is a fabulous picture of Alchymist!!!! SWOOON!!!

It's going to be 12C/54F on Friday. Mostly rainy, but there'll be some sunshine. :)

    Trish,

Carp sounds like a goodcway to go. Fish iften are considered the best fertiluzers. Oooooo, no, your dog dug up @the buried dog.” Oh, My! Not good! Best bury it far away from your yard.

    Jim,

I’m glad Gracie is ok with Thunder. Maybe Savannah can hide under the covers orceat sausage, as Trish gives her dogs. I didn’t have any storm yesterday, just a little rain. How about you?

    Marcie

I love your Japanese Iris. I have 3 Japanese Iris. They love water ir growing on edges on ponds. Since it still rsins hete a lot they seem hapoy, butvare not blooming yet. Yours seems to bloom at the same time as regular iris.

    Magpie,

Lively to see your rosrs! Pop in when you can! We miss you.

    Susan,

It is extra wirk to use whole fish. I only give them to revovering small roses. I have 80 rosrs and that wouod be too many fish! LOL!

    Carol,

Bye, Bye, F. Crush. I am sorry about La Fontaine. If too much fungus-best to remove them. Thursday was just a little rain for few hours, still, pleasant. A&A has tons if rose selection now! Many good rosrs! They have lots if @garden tosrs,” which you may like best with fragrance. Florist roses, which I buy, from A&A, ususlly have no fragrance, but I live their beauty! A&A grafted come with big roots and very healthy. You may be able to have them delivered in late spring-you will need to ask them? They have many Tantaus such as Asjley next year! She us a fabulous bloomer & cold hardy. Sweet Demight is a fabulous garden rose, they sell, with very fragrant blooms and blooms a ton! Ben has Sweet Delight and said it was one of his favorite bloomers! Fish fertilizers are the best!

    TODAY

It’s hot! AC on half the night. 76F in early morning now 8;30am, but it will be in 80sF by noon. 85F today. More AC today. I may not use sprinklers today since rained last evening.

No rain, just sunshine today & tomorrow. Showing home this weekend so time to clean, again. Pray this is it! I believe price is right.

Yestrday, I had many new rose blooms…

. continue…. I also had a ”red or Kansas peony bloom for first time-forgot photo. There will be 7 more peonies to bloom ,but only .one has a bud, deep wine colored Armani. In future seasons maybe my other peonies will bud & bloom.

Yesterday morning photos below… much has opened-up by today! Maybe more photos later….

Charming Corneille has 3 blooms for last 2 weeks.

“I’m a little princess,” she says!

Munstead W. has even more blooms than these photos a day ago…. glad I have 2 Miunstead W. . so I finally have enough blooms!

    Great MW wallpaper!

Constance, yesterday, had a few opening blooms,. Today fully open. May do photos today, again, later.

    Carol,

I’ve been very pleased with my A&A rose bushes, bare roots and potted. All are thriving and healthy. I am enjoying watching the new varieties that I have never seen before in person develop. Winter survival is the big question with my garden and I don’t want to lose any of them.

Little stroll in my garden…. It is cooling….forecast says 79F, but it’s cloudy, No sun & feels cooler. Nicer! Most roses blooming!

Miyabi starting to bloom….She’s a big hulk, with huge numerous thick canes, 4years old, 4ft tall/wide. . Not sure I want to dig her up. Easier to buy a new Miyabi?? Love her!

Love these unique blooms, starting to open….

Brother Cadfael is having his best year with a rounder bush, several canes, and better blooms!

Anne Boleyn so sweetly blooms this season!

Kansas Peony first & only bloom, 😊🥀

Most peonies were smashed in rain & burned out by sun 90F yesterday. However, Sarah Bernhardt was in part-shade/sun, still has several beautiful blooms.

Rohald Dahyl has the most vibrant yellow blooms starting out. .

Princess Anne’s best year with a full round bush, and first blooms, too!

Louis Odier, Beautiful first blooms! 4ft so far.

Charles Darwin, has deep golden first blooms.

La Reine blooms a day after Louis Odier.

La Reine, big plump fragrant blooms!

    La Reine, Plump bubs, too!

    Beverly has many huge blooms.

Most of my roses were pruned hard due to having a too freezing winter and many black canes. . However, being that many are in 2nd, 3rd, 4th-5th years-they are having their best year with bigger bushes and more blooms! Surprise! LOL!

I am very pleased with my 2 Munstead Woods, who are having their best season! The MW own root has many blooms and nice 2-3ft round shaped full bush. 2 years ago, I thought I would loose a wimpy Munstead W grafted. However, with added rich soils and organic fertilizers she has filled out and now blooming more & more! Very happy for both of my MWs! The most wine colored blooms this year, ever!!! They are total winner!

Meilland roses (or Yves descendants) are the exception. They are barely recovering including Francis Meilland and Yves Rouge de Perfum, but they survived! YAY! . Yves Charotte Splash did not survive. I lost Yves Piaget a few years ago to winter, too. Someday, I will replace these 2 roses-they were so beautiful!

    Diane,

What’s really amazing is that most of my roses bloomed within 1-5 days of my roses last year. Many on the same date! So my garden in 2026 is really on same schedule as last year. How do they know? Weird! 😊🥀😇

    Moving Plans

Although, when I prune my roses back & pot them, that will be a new start for all of them. They will go to recovery-new start mode. It’s ok! I think it will happen after 1st flush. A new start for my garden, a new adventure! Exciting new garden plans! Exciting for new home renovating, too! I am already thinking about rebuilding a front porch and decorating the new PNW home a tad., . I’d like a cedar front porch with white Victorian trim, new outdoor carpets, too. I’ll add a larger round table and umbrella and a couch w/ floral cushions, to the large porch, too. I’d like an English Cottage designed porch. (The home I am eyeing has a large front porch, but I may change it a little, tee, hee.) I have been planning how to remodel the front & back decks and decorate a brick patio with potted planrs & outdoirs furniture! Putva rosie garden bed beside the oatio, too. Thrilled to start planning! I have indoor remodeling ideas, too. I’d like to add a large crystal chandelier and a few things over time.

    30ish buds/blooms on a cane.

Mother of Pearl, Stunny sunny pearly colors!

Juliet, Showing off her stuff. Gardener chopped off a 2 ft cane from Juliet, so she is smaller starting this season with a few canes left., She is still about 2 ft.

Constance has really beautiful blooms, but photo were blurred. Photos another day. Many other roses blooming, too…..

Jim, it wouldn't surprise me if your Double Easy Orange looks just as good this August as it did last August. That rose wants to grow and bloom! So are you still having a lot of rain today? Well, we're still having wind, though it isn't as bad as Wednesday's wind. I hope all these weather issues go away fast. I'd like some of your rain, though.

Carol, I'm so sorry about your losing a second rose, your favorite, to downy mildew. K-r*p. Will you try La Fountaine again? If you order from A&A in the future, you'll have a great new selection or roses to choose from. I hope your weather warms up some because 54F isn't that high. I was outside sweating up a storm in the mid 80s, but we'll be in the 90s in a couple of days, and that's too hot. But today, all was gorgeous. My lavender plants are all blooming and they are enormous and starting to fill up the slope. They definitely have produced some volunteers as well. Everything is going full blast, including my patio "crops". I think my biggest job now is deadheading, but it's better than crawling along removing tree suckers, which I'm still doing. I get rid of them, and back they come.

Kitty, I'm trying to pick a favorite among all your last rose photos. I could only narrow it down to Summer's Romance, of course, Anne Boleyn, and Brother Cadfael. But all are lovely. Is Anne Boleyn an Austin? Got check HMF. I especially liked that rose shaped like a fish--haha. Bad joke.

Marcie, lovely Japanese iris. Are they tricky to grow? I like them and Siberian iris lots better than the popular around here bearded iris. They have an extremely short bloom season. Diane

    Diane,

Yummy Ascot! The perfect almost climber! She sure blooms beautifullyband prolufically! Aren’t most of your roses climbers, being they are all about 6-12 ft, LOL! (Poor joke.) You couod sell each one for $150-$200 as a climber! 🤪😊🥀😇. Angel Face is so pretty this season. Do you still have 2 AF?

Ha, Ha! Thank you! Lots blooming in my garden-this fun time of year! Rose shaped like a fish? From my fish videos? Or Blushing Parasol? LOL! Cadfael & Mother of Pearl do have the most enchanting big blooms! I just finished posting… comments for you above… too. Your garden is in full swing now! Fabulous! Hoping the wind stops! You have had enough! Those high temps are too much! Why can’‘t we all just have 70sF all the time-be soooooooo NICE!!!!!! Does anyone hear my prayer??? “We’d like 70sF all the time!” LOL! Ok, a little variation, but not too much and serene gentle breezes, only. Aweeeeeee! Your lavendar and porch crops are thriving! How do you eat/cook those hot peppers? I’d love the tomatoes! I miss my sweet peppers this year. Anne Boleyn is an Austin. She’s small, but blooms pink-peachy & sweetly in flushes!

Have a lovely garden evening! I am craving something chocolate? Choc silk pie or ice cream? What shall I have…….

Headed to the kitchen…….🤪😊🥀😇🌸🌺 Tee, hee!

It's taken 45 minutes for my computer to let me have access to this. Sheesh. And I strained my back. It has not been a stellar day. Otoh, if I'm going to strain my back, this rainy, windy day is the day to do it. Tomorrow, thank heavens, is going to be a sunny day with temps of 20C/68F!!! YAY!!! I just need my back to get better. It's doing much better than this morning. Okay, enough whining. :)

Kitty - Saturday, Don will dig out those two DM roses. It is what it is. I'd love to get some roses from A&A. I had a quick look at their roses, and they have great variety. I had Sweet Delight before. It died. I'm a terrible rose mama. You're having hot weather. Send some my way, and I'll send you some cool weather. :) I'm still praying that you sell your house. Keep us posted. :) Kansas peony blooms are beautiful. :) Those are all lovely roses!! Constance is my fave. Mmmmm.

Jim - fabulous Orange Dude!! You're doing it proud. :)

Kentucky_rose - Good to hear that your A&A roses are doing so well. Yes, I understand that Dr. Huey is more tender. I hope your roses survive winter well. :) Crossing my fingers for you. :)

Kitty - thanks for the stroll through your garden. :) Everything is lovely!! Anne Boleyn and Princess Anne (my fave) have darling button eyes. Kansas blooms are SO vibrantly fuchsia!! La Reine has lots of buds...gorgeous!! That's too bad about your Meilland roses not doing well. But, many survived. :) Your new garden will be wonderful, and so fun for us to follow its development. Your outdoor designs sound great. I'm terrible at design, so it's going to be fun watching what you do. :)

Kitty, Ascot certainly isn't a climber with its thick upright canes. Both my plants are self supporting. In fact, my only climber is Colette. Golden Celebration could easily be a climber, but it's also a self supporting large shrub. Thanks about Ascot which is a favorite. I've grown these two since 2011 or so. I got them from Palatine before I joined the forum. They go way back and have never given me any trouble. And I do still have two Angel Face plants, one in a front yard flower bed, and one in the back among the masses of penstemon. I was hoping to take photos of the lavender tonight, but it got windy again. So annoying. I think nothing but 70s would be lovely. I lead a pretty boring life at this stage of the game, so why not have boring temps? I hope your beautiful garden is continuing to do well and that you're pleased with it. I grow the hot peppers for my son in law, Ray, and he cooks with them, makes salsas, sauces, eats them, and dries them. He cooks for all of us quite a lot, so I have those dishes, but pick out the peppers--even the milder ones, and they are none of them mild, are too hot for me. I grow regular sized tomatoes in the raised bed. This year it's grape tomatoes on the patio, plus a lot of herbs, chives, and other stuff. Always a pot of nasturtiums, too.

Kentucky Rose, I'm so glad you've posted your beautiful roses, some of which are new to me. Artistry and Rainbow Niagara are gorgeous with their orange coloring. And their shades are quite different, proving orange has many looks and I like them all. Mr Caleb is an eye catcher. Beautiful, but with an interesting name. I need to look that one up on HMF. Hot Princess is perfection. Thanks for givomg us a look at your rose garden. Diane

Kentucky, Gorgeous showy roses! Living the Dream is my favorite-Spectacular! Yay for Shania Twain! I love her!

Diane, Ooooooo! Aweeeeee! Twilight is so intensely decadent and velvet purple! They all look like climbers to me! LOL! Your giant gorgeous roses! (Yes, most self-supporting, tee, hee!) Praying for cooler weather for us both!

Carol, Surely you will find fabulous roses to replace the 2 you are ditching! New roses are so exciting and clearing a couple pots is the greatest invitation to search for new roses! A&A has such unique varieties!

Lately, I am looking at Victorian Kiss, by Dummen Orange and Gossip Girl Spray by VIPRoses added to my order list. 2 Pink Roses: I think they both look similar?:

    1. Victorian Kiss will be grafted, potted, Yay! She has pink to peach blooms and semi-gloss leaves. 4 inch blooms, 80 petals. Light pink petal edges.

    2. Gossip Girl is a spray with 4 inch blooms, 60 petals, is pink w/ white edges. I see 7 roses on one cane. Pink w/ white edges. VIPRoses reel & photo.

Jim, thing's are looking good for your Dude. How's the rain going? I think your Double Easy Orange will be blooming fulll blast by July as it also grows bigger. DEO is one of my five most favorite roses. I doubt I can get it down to five.

Carol, isn't there anything Don can do to help those posted photos load for you on your computer? I hope some nice June rose growing weather has finally arrived for you. I hate for you to miss your roses. Thanks about Ascot, and if you could see his canes, you'd realize that the blooms are not heavy at all for this Hercules rose. Now Abe is a different story. After his first big blooms the later buds opened on his typical spindly canes, and almost all face downward. The sad part about Brother Cadfael and the other roses in that bed is that they barely produce a spring flush and then the tree shade does them in. That bed is a mess. I have no place to move those roses and it's totally frustrating. But thanks for all your nice comments and support.

Kitty, yes, all my roses are totally self supporting but Colette. I won't buy any more climbing roses, even if I had the space because I no longer climb stepladders. You younguns have that in your future. I'm very steady and have never fallen, but I'm not pushing my luck on a stepladder. I'm tall and I just pull down high up canes and cut them back. Those photos you posted are gorgeous. I particularly like Victorian Kiss because I love frilly roses, and she's got frills. Is the last photo of one of your lovely roses? It's hot here, too. We'll be up to 97F in about three days, and I really hate that. My tomatoes are loving our current weather and all have green tomatoes. Can't wait for homegrown maters. Diane

Perfect day!! I can see all of the photos now. YAY!!

Kitty - Yes, I'll find new roses, but not this year. That's all there is. I hope A&A roses do well for me next year!! :) Thoseo are both beautiful roses!! They do look similar, but dissimilar enough to say get both! :) Personally, I like Gossip Girl the best.

Jim - my roses are really behind, too. Weather has been too cool. Your Orange Dude is a beauty!!! The petals are wonderfully arranged. :)

Diane - I've been dithering with the computer. Don changed computers with me, and I couldn't post. But I fixed that. I can see the pictures, and everything's great!! Yes, today is wonderful for the weather, and we're expecting nice weather for next week. :) :) :) :) :) YAY!!! I really hope my roses will grow. Oh, darn about Abe's weak necks. What a shame for those divine blooms to faceplant. Rats about the shade. So some of your roses are like once bloomers, but they don't produce many blooms in their one flush. And they're too HUGE to dig out and replace with a shade loving plant. I guess you have to just enjoy what they do manage to give you. Wow, you'll be almost at 100F. That's horrid. We'll be in the low 70s, much, much nicer. I still need to get tomato plants. I think I'll cheat and get some largish ones. OOOOooooh...my favorite is your first The Prince picture...oh my!!! Those colors and petals. :) :) I love your 2nd picture of Love Song...perfection, and even a bud thrown in for free. :) Eglantyne is scrumptious...so whipped and frothy with petals. :) JC is lovely.

Help anyone! Where are you able to get the Versigny rose? This rose is on my unicorn list, but no one in the US seems to sell it, except Rose Explosion, which I don't trust. Is A&A selling it? Thanks all. Diane

    Hi, Y’all

I finally watered potted roses & sprinklers done! Super hot sunny today! Forecast said 84F, but think it was over 90F!!!! It’s 7:30pm and still hot, but shady outside. I peaked at roses and Wow are they starting to bloom! I need to share a few in album style and more in coming days! I took too many photos!

    Diane,

Beautiful booming roses! My favorites are Ascot -the amazing boomer and delicate frilly Eglantyne! Yep! Those hot peppers sound too hot for me, too! I am game for your cucumber samdwiches and grape tomatoes, though! They sound soooo refreshing & cool! Anastasia lijes grape tomatoes, -she chews them well, too! She also likes bananas, cheese and hot dogs ! Little treats she had today! She ijes bread,too-one time shecare my whole loaf of bread ! Yikes!

My biggest suprise is Brother Cadfael, today his booms!! I planted him several years ago on the front hill & for 2 years he almost died-only a couple strong canes were left. Only bush roses can grow there, so it was a poor location-coldest spot on my property, too Then a year or so ago I moved him to the garden bed in back yard. It’s taken 2 years for him to grow numerous canes and round out a little fully However, today is the first time I have seen muti-blooms on his bush and they are BIG BLOOMS!!! Wow! The prettiest ever & soooo big! I had no idea! I think his big cupped blooms are the biggest in my garden, except Yolande de Aragon which blooms are more open-frilly. Brother Cad is sooooo showy! A must keep! I highly recommend anyone to buy him-he is fabulous!

    Brother Cadfael

    Part of the bush

    Jim, &Friends,

Cream Veranda has peach buds & pink to cream blooms! I have 7-8 bushes in front beds. They are more mature-2nd season & all starting to bloom Their leaves are the most glossy green & healthy-very disease resistant!!!! Best disease resistant rose ever! Very showy for front yard! Photos do not show them off as beautiful as they are! And Crm Veranda blooms way into fall when all other roses stop blooming! Their pink blooms are beautiful up close!

    Siky creamy soft pinks! Yummy!

Not looking forward to diggin these 2 big bushes up. Soil is good and soft, though. To transport to PNW.

    Constance has big blooms, too!

    Carol,

Kitty, I have an idea for you when it comes to your biggest bushes you really want to take, but are too hard to dig up: take cuttings a week or two before you move and wrap them with the burrito method that Kim ( Roseseek) recommends for rooting cuttings. You could wrap them, label them and then pretty much forget them until after you move. Of course, you have to keep them in a place that doesn’t get too hot, but that shouldn’t be hard. Room temp or a bit warmer should be fine. Several weeks later, they should be starting to root and you can pot them up. If you end up with extras of any kind, pass them along to friends or sell them. Anyway, just an idea that I would probably try if I ever move! I’ve done the burrito method and it works.

    Diane,

A&A doesn’t have Versigny yet. Finding a grafted one,too-not sure??

I highy recommend the new release ” Fontenay rose,” grafted, from A&A in the fall or spring. It looks similar to Eisvogel, but Tantau thinks it’s improved on.

It’s a nice idea,, Thank you! Although, I will be driving all the way across the US. It may take 7+ days as I am slow in moving. I have driven it before & it may be a little much for a new cutting rose to survive.. I am thinking about watering them & spray misting in the trip. I have a few travel ideas. I plan on putting a few baby roses in the SUV with tinted windows, but I think the trip will be difficult for babies as well as all my plants. I think I will be digging up Miyabi & Eisvogel & prunning them way back. They will survive. Next year they will be beautiful, again. It’s nice they are mature with lots of blooms! Next season they will have tons of blooms again! They are big beauties!

Tomorrow I show my home, again. This may be it! Then plans to go forward start! 🌺🥀❤️😊

Diane, Roses Unlimited carries Versigny. They sell really nice one gallon potted own-roots, which I know you don't want. But RU is a great mom and pop totally honest company.

Susan, thanks for the information, but I can't bring potted plants into Idaho. Most sellers won't ship roses in soil and with leaves to Idaho. It's really limiting me to bare root roses, but then I have no space, anyway. I'd dig up a rose to make the space for Versigny, I think.

Kitty, I've driven, flown, and gone by train and bus so many times in my life (when I was younger) all the way across the US by different routes and with different destinations. I don't envy you. If you're taking your time and enjoying various scenic wonders with others in the car, it can be great, but this isn't a vacation for you.

A gigantic bud of Ashley is opening and trying to push outward against all the other big Ashley buds surrounding it. This is going to be interesting. I'm taking pics tomorrow. It's taken Ashley forever to form those giant buds. She's the last rose to bloom in my garden. The plant has grown a lot, too. It was my smallest rose for two years. Diane

Remember these? I hope the new blooms are as good. They last forever and are huge.

We're have a nice hot day on Sunday...25C/79F!!! Hottest day yet.

Jim - your plants are very healthy. :)

Diane - I hope you can find Versigny. :) Oh, your Ascot!!! As soon as I saw it I compared it to my crappy roses. lol I'm chuckling over it. Such insanely beautiful blooms!!! When I saw your TZ blooms, my first thought was "how fresh and lovely." Your Colette looks like it's going to break that trellis. Ye Gads!!! Rosemoor looks lovely there.

Kentucky_rose - lol Yup. So true. :) High five to another inept computer person. :)

Kitty - I'm so jealous of everyone's blooms. :) But mine are starting to do a bit of bud growing. I think my Anuschka will be blooming soon. Wowza!! I love your bush shot of Bro Cad!! And each bloom has so many petals!! That first picture of Cream Veranda is something special!! It looks so romantic!! Wonderful. Good luck with your home showing!! I hope that A & A deliver to Canada next year. I told Don that they'll be expensive...shipping, exchange rate, etc., and he said that's why he was working hard for so many years. Awwww :) :) Constance is a beauty!! How big, approximately, are the blooms? I love your Eisvogel. Surprisingly, mine is still alive and growing. :) Your Eisvogel bushshot is amazing! Ooooh...Fontenay is gorgeous!!! I think I'm going to spend some time on the A&A website.

Judi - good idea! I think Kitty likes own root roses.

Diane - I especially love the last picture of Ashley. :) :) I'm excited to see the pictures you take tomorrow.

    Diane,

Your Ashley is beautiful! Soooo many big frilly blooms! My Ashley is just starting to bud up, but she is in part-shade. When I transplant her to PNW she will be given a prime spot w/ more sun! Love her blooms! Hiw is your Bro Cadfael? How tall & wide? Hiw many big olump blooms? He is the most amazing big cupoed bloomer! Yes, I will take my time drivi g across the US. The hotels will be my vacation,!

    Carol,

79F can be hot, too. I am being careful & my new baby roses get shade right now. I have 79F today, too. Maybe thunder & some rain today, but hope not during home showing.

Thank you regarding my bloomers. I awoke this morning thinking about all my blooming roses! Love those Crm Verandas which are ever bloomers and always healthy! Constance has 5” blooms. Bro Cadfael is one of my best DAs now because it’s blooms are sooooo big & cupped-looks pretty grand in the garden. I’m glad your Eisvogel is still alive-he is a hardy vigorous Tantau! Anuschka , a Tantau, should be hardy, too! Ashley, a Tantau, would be good for you, too, from A&A. The Tantaus are German and ought to be hardy. My Tantaus and Kordes roses are very cold hardy and vigorous. Message A&A on facebook rose forum and ask when they ship to Canada and if roses will be own root, potted or grafted, and bare roots? And when do they ship for you? Fall or spting?

APRIL & ASHLEY ROSES; A few ideas to consider:

A&A has a huge selection of roses.

When you shop on A&A website they classify roses . The skill level helps to know if the rose needs ”special care and a skilled gardener or not.” If it needs a lot of special care or experienced gardener it is probably a florist rose and may not be as hardy.

The garden roses are usually easier to grow, more hardy, bloom more in the garden and are more fragrant. They are meant to grow and look showy in a garden. They tolerate weather possibly better. I may recommend for you to do grafted which grow fastest first year, bareroots, and garden roses. Tantaus may be the most hardy. Interplant and Jan Soek Rozen roses are sonetimes hardy-from the Netherlands.

Florist roses are really meant to look their best in green houses. I love them due to their unique blooms, but they may not bloom as much as garden roses. However, blooming greatly varies. Spray roses have the most blooms, like 20-30 buds in one cane, LOL!

    Juwena , a florist rose, has only a few buds-very pristine-slowly opens-hardy, from A&A.

Eisvogel, may be a garden rose? Not from A&A. He blooms a ton when mature and very hardy Tantau.

Miyabi, not from A&A, is super hardy & vigorous, but she is a florist rose. Her blooms may be faded in the very hot sun. However, I get a lot of beautiful peach pink blooms from her in good colors.

Florist roses don’t always keep that “green house perfect bloom color.” My Blushing Parasol , a florist rose, from A&A, turns yellow-peach in hot sun, but is white/light pink in a green house and in cool weather. Blushing Parasol is very hardy/vigorous from Jan Spek, Netherlands.

Georgia Peach, from Jan Spek, from A&A, is a great rose, hardy, medium vigor, and blooms a ton in sprays.

After trying out over 20 florist A&A roses and other vendor florist Ross, I know quite a few , which ones will perform well in gardens.

If you buy the A&A spring potted roses-they are grown from green houses in coconut coir. They may be own-root or grafted. You need to ask A&A for each one which are iwn-roots & which are grafted? They may need hardened off if grown from green house.

. I found my grafted bare root A&A Victorian Secret, which I grew indoors in March, soaking water, now potted, is the fastest growing new rose I have. My Charming Corneille, A&A, is little slower own root, but looks big, fully leaved, and bloomed first. I guess they both did well, really.

A&A own root & grafted-that are potted roses come big and usually fully leaved-ship all year around, but new ones come out in spring. Some sell out after spring. They restock too.

A&A grafted roses in fall/spring come bare root with large canes/roots.

I’m moving to a milder clinate to grow my florist roses. However, it can have 32F sometimes, too.

Eustacia Vye is now blooming, Very Showy!

Kitty, of course you get to decide which roses to take with you to the PNW and how you take them, but you misunderstand what I’m saying about taking them as cuttings. If you “ burrito” them, you won’t be misting them or anything at all. They will simply be wrapped in damp paper towel and put in plastic bags and you could put hundreds in a small cooler chest for the trip and you wouldn’t need to care for them at all. They will be doing their work quietly in the dark, growing callouses on their stems and starting little roots so that you can pot them up when you get there and have time. It takes several weeks for them to be ready to pot up. I’d encourage you to check it out, but hey, it’s your choice! :)

That sounds amazing as an idea! I am concerned I may or may not be successful. . I am olanning to have a cooler chrst for food & getting ice daily. Even getting ice daily may be difficult. I am thinking I couod try a few burrito roses in a secind cooler-maybe the ones I thought I’d leave behind. I think I’ll take all my florist risrs & a few others, then follow yyour idea & “take a few cuttings in burritis, ” too. If I am not goidcat rooting, I’ll just buy new ones. It’s a great idea!

Thank you very much!!! Icam glad you clarified! Wonderful!

    Clarification:

Shall I take cuttings and immedisrely wrap them in wet paoer towels and put them in baggies? Then put them in the iced cooler? Shall I add rooting hormone to each of them? Please explain further? thx, Kitty

Jim, I thought that was a Diervilla, and it amazes me that you're growing Australian natives that probably like it hot and dry. But they like your weather, too, obviously, since they do so well in your garden.

Kitty, I love Eustacia Vye. I'd love to grow her. One more rose for the unicorn list. I love Tantau roses and got my first ones, three Bernstein-Roses, in about 2009. Ascot quickly followed, and then Augusta Luise. I want more! Ashley is only about three years old, a newcomer in this garden......I'm glad you're getting hotel breaks during your cross country trip, and not pitching a tent--haha. Diane

Evelyn Now I notice the thrips damage on her buds.

    A while back with peonies

My best Evelyn is still in bud in a back flower bed. She got cut way down, relieved of her big overgrown canes, so she is very late to bloom. I guess even later than Ashley.

Kitty - I hope your house sells today!! Constance's blooms are 5"!! Wow!! She's worth taking! Sounds like you're taking Bro Cad? I don't think I would get Ashley, since it's not fragrant. It certainly is gorgeous, though. That's a good idea to ask A & A those questions. I'll do that. :) Oh, that's good to know about the skill level/special care. Thanks! Interesting info!! I'll ask you what you think of roses that I'm going to get. That may not be until next year, though. I'll definitely make sure they're grafted. Thanks! Fully leafed roses...wow, that's a treat!! Thanks for your help. :) :) Wonderful looking!! Your Eustacia Vye is glorious!! I especially love the bush shot. I hope mine can look even a little bit like that. :)

Kitty, the instructions in your last post are for mailing cuttings, not for rooting by the burrito method. If you’re interested in the method I mentioned, please look up Roseseeks article on his website, “Pushing the Rose Envelope.”
Here’s a brief rundown of how to do it: harvest and prepare your cuttings as normal, and dip them in rooting hormone. Then take a damp paper towel (wet and then wring it out so it’s only damp) and lay it out flat on the table. Lay a cutting near the end and roll it till it’s covered, add another cutting and repeat until you are out of cuttings or paper towel. Slip the burrito inside a ziplock bag and label by variety and date. Keep it in a slightly warm place like on top of a fridge for several weeks. Check the cuttings: they should be nice and green and the ends should be nicely calloused and putting out little white roots. If not, roll them back up as before in the bag and let them another week or two. Once they are putting out roots, pot them up and keep them in a shaded place and mist them regularly till they root well and grow new leaves.

If you do this a week or two before you leave for the PNW, you shouldn’t have to worry about them for several weeks after you arrive. Just be sure that they’re in a safe place on the trip so they don’t get too hot or too cold. ( Not in a cold ice chest with your food.)

Ok, That sounds great! Ok, put the burrito cuttings on top if fridge in medium warm area for a week before trip. Then putvthem in a cooler (without ice.) for the trip. If car is air conditiohed-may be 70sF for drive ine week across US. I’ll follow your instructions and look up Roseseek’s. Thank you! Kitty

I've really been enjoying everyone's rose photos!

Diane -- Evelyn is a queen among queens. There's just nothing like her blooms. I was also amazed by your profusion of Golden Celebration blooms. I was lucky enough to catch a GC in bloom when I was out in CA a few weeks back, and found the scent and chalice-shaped blooms utterly enchanting. I may have revisited that GC about four times to take in its blooms. If I'd seen your GC, I may have tried to set up camp beneath it. What a great variety. Hope you're able to enjoy all your blooms despite the blasted wind. Your Augusta Louise blooms were afrilly delight like they always are, and I'm guessing you were pleased that they didn't morph onto "Angry Augusta." You'd asked about my Martha Stewart, and yes, she put out three nice big blooms in her first "flush" after I got her. I see some of her qualities echoed in the many wonderful pink/peach roses your grow, so I do wonder if you might find her redundant, if were you to grow her (though I'd sure love to see what she could do in your care!).

Kitty -- So many wonderful blooms in your garden right now, though I'm particulary smitten wiht your Eisvogel. Both the bush and blooms look fantastic. Good luck with the showing of your home!

Carol -- We all knew Don was a heckuva guy, but he earns extra points for saying that roses deserve a part of the household budget. ;)

Kentucky -- Are there fiber optic lights running through your Living the Dream? Amazed by how it glows!

I'm in Upstate NY for for the next week or so. There's a once-cultivated field nearby that's reverted to a sort of meadow, where these roses grow. Maybe Rosa blanda or carolina? Not sure. The effect of the pale pink blooms dotted among the tall grasses is really lovely.

Judi -- I was very interested to learn of that burrito method of propagation and will file that away somewhere in my brain for future reference. It sounds very compelling. How's your Lady Emma Hamilton doing?

We had a beautiful day today. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go out too much because of company. But that was fun, too. I cut off black canes from about 5 roses. When will it end? Oy vey.

Kitty - Oh, that would be great if you have a buyer this week. That would really help move you forward. :) :) I'm really intrigued by the color changes on your Eisvogel!! I didn't know it was phototropic. I still have La Reine, too. I would love mine to look like yours. Still no blooms. Your La Reine is my favorite of your roses...I adore it! The color is my favorite rose color...that dark pink. mmmmm

Diane - darn the shade. Phooey. Poor Augusta Luise. Double phooey.

Windowsill - I thought that was cute, and well said, about trying to set up camp beneath Diane's GC. :) :) That's good to hear that your Martha Stewart is blooming so well. :) Thanks about Don. :) :) Yay, Don!! Oh, you're right...that is so sweet to see the pink single rose in the middle of the tall grass. Magical
