I have ordered asian pear scion for this spring. Is it best to graft to another asian pear or will I get equal results if I graft to european on onknown rootstock?
You can graft it on Asian, Euros, or Cleveland flowering pear if you like. They all will do just fine. I have about 12 varieties of Asian pear on the Cleveland flowering pear tree.
Tony, I see you have them on Cleveland. I thought Calleryana wasn't that hardy. Do you mulch up in the fall to cover the crown? I'd love to see the Cleveland in full load! Thanks.
The Cleveland Pear (Pyrus calleryana) is a hardy ornamental tree with year-round appeal. Because this tree is more tall than broad, it nestles neatly into a narrow spot between other plants. Hardy to zone 5-8. No mulching require.
Sweet. I have a couple Hosui on it and didn't know how it compared to Betulaefoia @ -15, Reimer strain. I'm in the process of training my hosui's as they don't wantt to go vertical on me at 20" and keep branching stout hard to straighten, branches zigzag to horizontal. Very little apical dominance. I probably will regraft to a vertical grower like Olympic and go from there.
