Most apples purchased today are from grafted trees and may not come true from seed. In looking for your Smokehouse, I see it's an heirloom apple, but I can't tell you if the fruit you would get might resemble the apple you take your seed from. In general, domestic apple needs 2 - 3 months of moist chill (40F) to break dormancy, you can do that be either sowing and placing the pots outdoors, or putting the seeds in a bit of moist sterile vermiculite in a baggie in your refrigerator. Then sow, barely covered, keep moist, and wait for germination.

If you might want to take the guesswork out and purchase young trees, I've bought apple from this vendor, completely reliable...

I put my seeds in a baggie of water until they sprout. I then plant them in sphagnum peat. They tend to do better in sphagnum peat than in soil.

I have put the seeds in ziploc bags with moist potting soil
in the fridge for about 1-2 months .
When they start sprouting I put them individual pots with clean potting soil, in a mini greenhouse .
Put them in bigger pots when they grow .

Have had great luck with Gala apples, but also Golden/Red delisious, Pink Lady and pears as well .

I donCurrently trying Crab Apples as well, but no results as of yet . ( still patiently waiting ! )
