If you want something that's a fruit and tropical, try sea grapes. I once ordered 100 seeds from some one on ebay, and all 100 of them sprouted. Some were sprouted in sand, others in a mix of 50/50 sand/soil.

Unfortunately, all of my seedlings died at around a year old one winter, and then my larger plant actually died from termites. I'd like to try again with one in the ground and then build a temp greenhouse over it in the winter, but I've got too many projects going this year to do that.

thanks, maybe ill try them sometime, would i treat those as a tropical indoor plant?

Yes, they are sold often by places like wally world and such as a tropical house plant. In the wild, they can get like 40 feet, however, according to some websites. You should be able to keep them small indoors though, by using smaller pot sizes, pruning the height, and root pruning every once in awhile.

These should be fairly easily to get rooted from cuttings too. So, when you prune them, just put the pruned cuttings in some soil, and eventually, you'll have something to give to family and friends.

As far as difficulty of growing indoors, I really can't help you there. I've had bad luck growing many things indoors, which I believe is due to not having many sunny locations in the house and lack of humidity.

If you want an easy houseplant, try a Christmas Kalanchoe...

Thanks, ill probably try the christmas kalanchoe too :), i currently grow 3 varieties of kalanchoe but another one wouldnt hurt. and it looks different from the ones i have, i currently am able to grow avocado trees in my room and i do have an orange tree growing nicely too, so i think the grapes should do fine

If you've had luck with avocado, you should be able to do mango trees pretty well too, as long as you don't have any mango allergies. They have pretty much the same needs.

I use to do mangoes all of the time from seed. The first way I did mangoes was like this: Break open the hull and pull out the seed. With a little bit of Sphagnum moss, water, a ziplock bag, and a little peroxide, it's pretty easy. Basically, hydrate the moss in the ziplock bag with a little bit of peroxide added. Wait a few minutes, ring out the excess water, and then put the seed in the bag and place it somewhere dark and warm, like the the back of the top of your fridge.

Now, I just place the whole hull (with the seed in it) in a pot and cover about an inch with potting soil. You can crack the hull a little or not. It may not matter. It seems like early summer seeds do better using method one, while late summer seeds seem to do better with method 2 for me. I honestly don't know why.

Another tropical tree that's very popular is lychee. It's something I will eventually try one day.

Carambola is very easy to get going from seed. I've had pretty close to a 100% sprout rate on just grocery store bought carambolas.

Other tropical fruits: various guavas, pineapples, sugar apple, malay apple, cacao, bael fruit, bread fruit, mangosteen, jaboticaba, bolivian fuchsia, wampee, white sapote, acmena smithii, eugenia aggregata...Can't tell you much about these, but look them up and see if they would interest you.

Buy a piece of ginger root at the grocery store and plant it. In no time you will find you have a very nice ginger plant. It might even bloom for you and if you get tired of it, you can always dig it up and use the now much larger ginger root. They are VERY vigorous plants.
