Wish I knew. The primary way to tell is who chases who at spawning time - with certain of my fish its very obvious - some are always chasing and doing the nudging, some are always being chased and getting nudged. Then there's some that I just have no idea - everyone's racing around and getting in the act so it isn't always obvious.

Females are slightly more rounded, males more elongated. Females get the slightly rounded belly prior to depositing eggs. There again - some of my fish are obvious and some not.

You did it right. Some males don't show tubercles till they are a bit older.
