Depends on the type of seeds and especially on the size of the seeds. When they are large enough, I prefer a file or a sharp knife. In the case of some Gymnocladus seeds, I actually used a bench grinder (-:

p.s. The bench grinder worked very efficiently. The only real negative was the smell of burning seed shells as the stone ate through.

Dumb question...which end of the seed should you file? I assume the non-embryo end, or the side. Is the slightly "pointy" end the embryo end?

You just have to "expose" a small part of the inside so it can imbibe, is that correct?

Yes,to both questions.

Half century ago I got this notion that I would pick up a cheap lapidary tumbler a yard sale and experiment with that to scarify seed.

Don't recall why but I never even got my experiment started.
