Patio without base??!!

Hello,

Im considering trying to create a patio. Before anyone comes at me i have watch numerous videos and read tons of articles all stating that a base was necessary for the longevity of your patio but here is my situation, I am renting i do not own the house i live at so i do not want to commit a ton of money to this project. The property has a large number of pavers that were installed by previous home owners that were placed often haphazardly in the yard between those pavers in the yard and several stacks of bricks on the side of the house i was thinking i could dig up the ramdomly strewn pavers and repurpose them into a purposeful patio which would hopefully have the dual benefit of tidying up the yard of sunken pavers and creating a patio. Now this is where the base situation comes in i am definetly going to dig out the area i want to place them but do i need to put down a base again i rent and expect to be here for a few years but if a broken paver or a couple uneven bricks are all i have to worry about then i could do without a base. Basically i want to know what negatives are there for not using a base and if the only real negative is that it wont last as long as one properly done then i dont really mind. Also in case this question comes up ive already spoken with my landlord and he doesnt mind what i do in the back yard (i know thats what he says but to stay on his good side i obviously dont want to do anything that will damage the property or the home since i intend to butt the patio up against a back porch) If your reply is that in the future it will look bad and need to be redone after several years then i dont mind that as i will either likely be gone and he can just get rid of it as i will have already done him the favor of collecting all the materials in one area. lol. Anyway can i get away without using a base in a patio for a couple of years or will i damage the property by not using a base?
