Andre, I just recently completed a dry stack limestone planter\wall around a large pin oak in my yard. At the highest point the wall is 36" inches high and slopes to ground level on the backside. I had no prior experience with dry stacks, that being said I dug down about 4 inches for my footer run of rock, bantered my wall about a half inch each time I went up and used large long stones to make a sort of tie back into the bank on the inside of the wall, I was careful to stagger my joints and I finished with the largest stones I could find on the top row ( for seating). The project has been complete for about 2 months with no visible problems, I suppose the winter freeze/thaw will tell the story. I wanted to upload some pics but have had no luck. Once again I am a lowly amateur, some of the people on this site know their stuff about such projects, maybe they can convey some knowledge to us all! see ya

I forgot to mention that I pea gravel behing the wall and lined it with weed barrier, I then used miratic? acid to clean the creek goo from the stones and am now in process of planting my fall flowers in it

andre> I put the pea gravel all along the inside base of the wall, making sure i filled in all of the cracks and crevices as high up as 1 ft. I used a tamping rod to tamp it down solid all along these areas and a broom handle to tamp it tite into the interior cracks on the upper levels. We had a monstor storm here yesterday, afterwards I saw no evidence of soil leaking from the wall. A note here, I used a high quality weed barrier along the inside of the wall, I beleive it was a 3M product, I beleive this is key for me to be able to hold the topsoil in the area. once again I'm just a rookie at this! have a good day.
