help with tree I d and when to plant

HI all, hope everyone had a good holiday. I need help with the I D of my passalong tree. We always called it a cherry tree, the leaves are purple with white spring flowers. They are short lived and very ornimental. I'll try and post a photo on the i d page.

Can I plant them now? I'm 60 miles from the Gulf and will treat then right. Thanks for the help.

My guess is prunus cistena, purple sandleaf cherry. But I don't know if they grow that far south. I've found mine to be pretty sturdy, and I would think winter would be an excellent time to plant them in LA, as it will give them time to get established before heat hits.
