Purple Smoke Tree, What to do with it to winterize it?

I have had a Purple Smoke Tree for about 6 years now. It seems to die in the winter and then regrow every year. Am I doing something wrong? Should it be covered in the winter, or left as is? Should it be pruned or not? Please help me, I'd love to see it get bigger!

I live in zone 5, too, and it's a dieback shrub here. I like it pruned to get more colorful leaves. I sacrifice the flowers(smoke) by doing this, but I don't like them anyways. There are different cultivers, but most get to be about 15-20ft. I think. They don't need a lot of fertilizer, so be careful with that.
