Straightenig a weeping tree branch

I have just purchased an Imperialis Glutinosa Alder. It is a small grafted tree (8 foot tall) that will have weeping branches. Since I would like it to grow a bit taller, can I train the main branch (which is already weeping) to go straight up ? I was thinking of using a long 8 foot bamboo stake and tie it from the base of the trunk to the top of the main branch, thus getting a very straight tree.

Thanks.
