compression testing

Hello,

I read the repair book and still don't know. Can I check the compression on a Tec 5HP Horisontal 1971 or is there a an automatic compression release that renders my reading useless?

I check with the choke and throttle open cranking with the electric start and get 60 psi. What should it be?

I have no real reason to suspect low compression. Seems to have power and run well.

That is good for a 37 year old engine but is the minimum for good power and easy starting. It does have a release mechanism so the reading does not reflect running compression but still gives a good indication of overall condition.

Problem is my gage is as old as the machine.
